A Thai man who posted that a female trader at a busy market in Chonburi had come down with coronavirus has admitted that he made it all up.

He has apologized at the Samet police station with a garland.

Earlier Laphatsada, 35, a soy milk seller, and Patumporn, 46, the owner of Nong Samor market went to the police after someone posted online that a female trader had tested positive.

The post caused a complete drop off in business as the public avoided the market.

The ladies wanted the poster prosecuted under defamation and computer crime laws.

Later Friday the poster turned up at the police station - he was Suwit, 51.

He had a "phuang malai" (garland) and an apology for Patumporn.

He said that he made up his claims. He saw the market being cleaned and thought that must mean one of the women there had tested positive for the coronavirus.

He said it was just a warning for people and he won't be posting again.

Sanook did not report if the police intended to take the matter further or if the apology had ended the case.
