This was not a peper about aliens from outerspace landing in Essex to have sex with Large Rodents, this was a paper from the Robert Koch Institute, one of the leading health institutes in the world which predicted in the minutest detail what we are all now going through. It was put before the German parliament and debated there.

 

So it is not correct to say this pandemic could not be predicted. It could be predicted and it WAS predicted. In 2012, by a highly reputable government agency in Germany, the Robert Koch Insitute.

Bojo himself could have reacted better as soon as the problem became apparent in China but arrogance ruled the day.

Back in 2002, Europe was protected to a great extent from the SARS outbreak by the Asian countries and a much lower level of human traffic. Arrogance in the west sees problems in the east as of their own making and couldn't possibly happen to them.

Bottom line here is he underestimated the problem and overestimated the ability to cope.

Didn't even pay attention when Italy started to replicate China, something that will cost the UK dearly.

Boris Johnson said 'UK is well prepared'.

 

Boris Johnson said 'We have a fantastic NHS, fantastic testing systems, the best in the world'.

 

Boris Johnson said 'We could have this dealth with in 12 weeks'.

As a Brit living in Germany I see a well organised planned operation underway here based on a plan formed many years ago for exactly this kind of event. The hospital ICU beds are being increased dramatically and in each city at least 1 main hospital has been designated as Coronavirus only.

 

Patients have already been moved from there to other hospitals to reduce the risk of cross infection. Extra beds have been added and consultation rooms converted to wards so the whole hospital is ICU specific.

 

Older nurses are being moved to the general hospitals and younger nurses to the ICU hospitals to limit the risk of fatal cross infections.

 

All hospital visitors are banned with the exception of those where children are involved or if the person is in a critical condition with a risk of dying.

We are are all self isolating and staying at home. There is no panic here and life feels quite relaxed. If you feel ill with Coronavirus symptoms you simply call a local free number and they will come to your home to undertake a test.

 

In the UK however, the years of NHS cuts and so called cost savings made by the UK Government (both Labour and Conservative) are coming back to haunt them. Not enough doctors and nurses, not enough beds, not enough ventilators, not enough masks, an overwhelmed 111 number that does nothing to help, and no organised plans. 

 

The NHS costs savings made year after year will be paid in human lives now.
