PHUKET: The British Embassy in Bangkok has announced that it will issue support letters for any visa type so that British nationals stuck in Thailand can extend their stay in the country instead of having to risk infection by travelling either back home or to another country.

UPDATE: In a message sent to The Phuket News today, it was confirmed that the letters being issued support extensions to stay for any type of visa.

“The British Embassy can issue a letter to support applications to extend existing visas. Those holding a tourist visa should first apply for a 30-day extension at an Immigration Office,” said the notice issued on the Gov.uk website for the British Embassy in Thailand.

yes one letter from the UK embassy to cover all UK citizens

This is not the time for more stupid red tape - it's time to think outside the box

Yep, a simple letter for all british nationals in Thailand sent to to the head of immigration and passed on to all immigration offices would be a better choice.

There is no way im going home and risking infection or passing it on to my parents who are 65 years old.

I need to get 60 days extenion on monday, so i will wait to get this letter until the 60 days are nearly up.

Yes I agree with you but why not just let you e-mail your request for an extension from immigration that will ready be thinking out of the box

Does anyone have the web address to register with the British Embassy? I seem to be going round in circles on the FCO site and not finding it.

Sensible point, except that Thais do stupidity so well, and talent should never go to waste.

But, as regards my question, who is "milking us dry", then?  Who is the "us" and how have you been "milked dry"?

Downloaded forms have been rejected by immigration, they want the original document .

Reports today of people going to immigration with a downloaded form and getting rejected and just getting 7 days

So, let's start locking overstaying tourists up in virus infested IDC?
If the foreigner cannot obtain such a letter, Phuket Immigration were unable to help them, Lt Col Udom re-confirmed yesterday.

Immigration routinely makes up their own rules, but now passes the buck?

Lt Col Udom Thongchin told The Phuket News that his office has no authority in the matter. “Everything is up to the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok,” he said.

A country like South Korea can grant amnesty to the estimated 150,000 Thais working illegally, but if a tourist gets caught between two countries bureaucratic nonsense Thailand, a Buddhist country, cannot show even a modicum of compassion during a global crisis?
Lt Col Udom also confirmed that B500 a day fines are being levied on any people who remain in the country after their permits to stay have expired.
Right after being tossed in the clink with copious Thai MSM fanfare and photo-ops with a population of tourist caught between a virus and a hard place?

The Thai government truly lack even basic humanity.  Bureaucracy and nationalism trumps compassion and common sense.

Since this only went 'live' today, I doubt that today's rejections are due to the British Embassy email/letter being denied.

There's so many 'downloaded forms' going around, who knows what one they fronted up with?
