All patients, regardless of their nationalities, tested positive for the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in Cambodia are entitled to have free medical treatment.

“We are poor, but our heart is big,” underlined Samdech Hun Sen, the Prime Minister at a get-together Wednesday with Cambodian health practitioners who have volunteered to combat the pandemic. All infected foreign nationals will be treated by Cambodian doctors free of charge, announced the Premier, stressing that it is Cambodia’s obligation as a host country.

Mr Hun Sen also stressed on three main tasks being carried out by Cambodia in its fight against COVID-19: prevention of imported transmission, prevention of transmission inside the country, and treatment of infected patients. Cambodia has been banning the entry of foreign nationals from Italy, Germany, Spain, France, the U.S., and Iran for 30 days since Mar. 17. However, recent infections of foreigners were before the travel ban and it was also unknown where they had contracted the virus.

Free treatment with no infrastructures...

Still, it would behoove other (richer) countries well to extend the same courtesy to travelers who got stuck there.

Cambodia's infrastructure is lacking, sure, but their heart is in the right place.
