Thailand reports 102 new coronavirus cases, three more deaths

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand reported 102 new coronavirus cases and three more deaths, the country's public health ministry said on Sunday.

 

The latest numbers raised the total in the Southeast Asian nation to 2,169 cases. Twenty three people have died in Thailand since the outbreak first emerged in January.

Up again, but only by 13 cases, probably not statistically important, new cases seem to be hovering around the hundred mark, give or take a dozen. 

I saw that South Korea is waiting until its daily new cases drop below 50 before it eases restrictions. I wonder what criterion the Thai government will apply?

We seem to be fairly consistent in the daily number of new cases and deaths, whereas in most other countries the increase is exponential. Is this the world's best medical hub or what?

Yes. Happy to see no sign yet of an exponential rise, though it is where these 102 people have been in the last ten days which we don't know. Awesome if some of them were already in some sort of quarantine, , though some of course may have been moving around far and wide. The Ro number, or how many other people each infected person passes it to is what is important and which remains largely unknown here.

At 100 a day it will come for us all in only about 1,900 years.

Based on a recent study of health care systems, from August 2019, Thailand ranked quite high at No.6.

 

As a guide to the ranking it is Interesting that the top 2, Taiwan and South Korea, are doing extremely well in controlling the CV outbreak.

1,900 years? Not sure that I can handle self-isolation for that long... might have to join Rooster and buy a scrabble set.

Remember most of the world sets safe PM 2.5 levels at around 25 but Thai's have much stronger lungs and an enduring sirit so 50 Micrograms is considered safe in Thailand. Therefore 100 Covid cases a day is no problem.

Ahh... but did she tell you which virus she was worried about?

Up and down,still to early to be certain,it's still unpredictable,numbers are not correct,wait longer and see what develops,keep up the with the advice and restrictions.

They are only testing suspected cases of covid for those that turn up at the hospital. Thailand has done 24474 tests for 2169 positive cases. That is an 8.8% positive rate. Other countries positive rates vary widely - very low in Australia, but over 50% in the Philippines. Sure, some people may have mild cases and never bother going to the doctor, but this is the same in every country. 

I'm not sure Thailand has the capacity to do mass testing, especially for those with mild symptoms. They tried using teat kits from China but they were unreliable - they were givign both false positive and false negative readings - info from my wife who is a Nursing college director and works closely with BIDI - one hospital treating covid patients.

Agreed! Now we just need to convince the people running the asylum.

OK,Let's assume they are testing 500-800 a day. More than that die every day in a normal year. Seems to me the best way get any idea of the real death number would compare the current death rates with normal death rate - problem is I have little faith that that number would not be doctored to

It's interesting to see other countries in this region showing similar figures...Malaysia & Indonesia etc...and no deaths reported in Cambodia & Vietnam...Whereas in many European countries & the US.

Agreed, but we have no idea if the numbers are a true reflection of the situation. The urgency of the measures coming in suggest otherwise. I heard and saw 2 ambulances going by my apartment in Jomtien within an hour of getting up. And I generally hear at least one every day.

 

The social distancing here is minimal, both by Thais and Expats. When I do have to go down to pick up a package, I see people hanging out as normal, socializing. and absolutely not close to 2 meters apart with almost everyone cramming into the tiny lifts together. The view of streets from my window, with people as close together as always, really makes me worry.

Indeed. Let's hope the hot weather is a major contributing factor.

Yes. Absolutely. I have observed the same as well and it is very very bad.

Thais appear to be highly compliant with the masks but highly uncompliant with the social distancing.

Are the public health messages even trying to educate the Thai people about this? If they are, it is not working.

Social distancing is more important than the masks.

Staying home as much as possible is more important than the masks.

The Thais are using the masks as a crutch! I'm also sure Thai people (in general) are going out a lot more than they should again because they falsely think the masks protect them.

This is deeply worrying for the people now in Thailand.

Better if they spent some of the $60 billion to help the local economy, on testing equipment from Taiwan, South Korea, Germany, but then all these creepy agreements with communist China, probably stops them from doing that, already the men in green are putting out excuses into their controlled media, saying the strain here is a weaker one, than the the Italian strain, that’s the excuse for weaker numbers, you can see in a matter of weeks, they are going to have to re-open the local economy

Sure enough hot air being blown around by everyone.....well even by me I guess.  Lets just wait and see what happens in another 2 or 3 days.  That's when the mass exodus folks from Bangkok will have been home long enough for it to either spread in the provinces or fizzle as some folks think...

So everyday serious/critical is 23. Active cases increasing but no change day by day to serious critical. So 3 died that would move it down to 20 and these deaths seem to get replaced by 3 active cases going serious/critical. 1 dies 1 in. 4 die 4 in. Can't see how that can be poss day after day.

Must be the only country in the world with nearly perfect linear growth. Thailaaaaannnn different, na.

MoPH deleted the pending test number from their reports, even redacted previously released reports fo good measure. In most countries that is called a cover-up. Here it's called Monday.

I don't think that most of them are deliberately not complying (though people gathering in groups of twenty to have a party clearly are not listening), it's more a case that in order to comply you have to be aware of where you are at all times in relation to others, and show consideration and courtesy accordingly. This is something completely alien to most Thais, they're usually convinced that they're the centre of the universe and the only thing that matters in it, so whether people are two feet away or twenty is irrelevant to them. And the concept of walking or moving well out of the way of somebody else is also likely to cause them an aneurysm, let the other person move, I'm the important one after all! You see it in many aspects of life here, and particularly in the selfish way they drive and park.

As you say education and compliance is the key. 
They probably believe the masks are all they need for protection.......again education. 
 

Unless  they Police it, it just won’t change. Same over here in UK. Yesterday first sign of sun 3000 people arrived at a Park in London, hoardes of people at a seaside resort who couldn’t practice social distancing if the wanted to, despite constant messages about staying at home.  But the government called the day a success. It’s almost that they know there will be a percentage who will never comply. 
 

In Thailand that % will be even higher I think.
