Labour minister urged to compensate all who are out of a job

In a Facebook post on Thursday (April 9), Katerut Laothamatas, spokesman for the Action Coalition for Thailand Party, called on Labour Minister Chatu Mongkol Sonakul to urgently consider compensating the employees of businesses that have been ordered to close in line with moves to control the spread of Covid-19.

 

He said they can be compensated under Section 33 of the Social Security Act.

 

“The party’s board and MPs unanimously agreed in a meeting on April 7 that the Labour Ministry should help all employees, regardless of the type of business, who were affected either by shutdown orders from the government or by the business owner’s decision,” he said.

 

“Everybody who comes under Section 33 [employees with regular income] must be compensated 62 per cent of their daily wages, based on a maximum monthly salary of Bt15,000, for a maximum of 90 days.” 

 

On Wednesday, the Cabinet okayed the abovementioned compensation, but only for employees of hotel and lodging businesses that have been forced to shut down. However, Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn later promised to extend this compensation to people working as tour guides and in other tourism-related businesses. 

 

“As party spokesman, I insist that the Action Coalition for Thailand Party is committed to helping all workers, regardless of the business,” Katerut said. “Many people have lost their jobs due to the effects of Covid-19 related lockdown and we must ensure they are not abandoned at this time of need.”

Good, and so they should but I suppose the bleeding hearts will now moan that entertainment Pretties are not covered

My staff are all covered by Social Security.... they pay and I pay every month. Now, my business has been forced to close down, and may never be able to reopen. Why should they not receive compensation from the Government? After all, that is why they were paying into the scheme. But no, only hotels and (maybe) tour guides are deemed worthy of this Government's help. In the meantime, I am having to cover their salaries as best I can, with no income. That, in itself, will lead to the business crashing, as I can't go on forever like this. Then, the Government will HAVE to pay out, probably even more in the long run. This situation has all been handled dreadfully by this Government, and I really hope it comes back to bite them on the *ss!

I have yet to hear of anyone who has received even 1 Baht from this shower, so where has all the money gone? Don't bother answering that. It was rhetorical. I already know.....

Yes businesses and staff who have lost their job should get compensation as the virus didn't cause the shutdown but the govts actions, same all over the world. Countries are slowly waking up to it

If you are a foreigner and do not have a work permit...do not apply for this compensation...????

Why only hotel and lodging businesses ?? What about all the services that rely on these places for work like laundry places , bakers , water delivery companies etc .
