By Cal Revely-calder Charles Ingram faces his £500,000 question, during which evidence of cheating became overwhelming CREDIT: PA Tonight sees the first episode of Quiz, the ITV drama about how Charles Ingram, the “coughing Major”, won £1 million on the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2001, then was exposed as a cheat and lost it all. Matthew Macfadyen plays Ingram, with Sian Clifford (best known as Claire in Fleabag) as his wife Diana, while Michael Sheen takes the role of the show’s host Chris Tarrant. The outline of the case is well-known. Ingram managed to win the grand prize becoming only the ITV show’s third millionaire, despite vacillating over a number of questions throughout his run. The couple were accused of having an accomplice, Tecwen Whittock, who’d coughed to signal which answer Ingram should give. The show’s producers withdrew the prize, and the Ingrams (and Whittock) were convicted of deception in court. Ingram was also stripped of his military rank. Maybe they think they can replicate Tiger King's success/notoriety, but it will never happen.
