Village headman flouts orders, holds big Songkran gathering

Nonthaburi governor Sujin Chaichumsak has ordered the Bang Bua Thong district chief to set up an investigative committee to look into the case of a village headman in the province bringing a large number of people together to hold a Songkran ritual.

Photographs of the village headman together with his guests pouring water on the hands of elderly people and seeking their blessings were posted online on Monday (April 13), leading to severe criticism.

Sujin said this was a clear violation of the Emergency Decree and breached the regulations of civil service.

“I want to inform every community leader in Nonthaburi that you should set a good example on your people,” Sujin said.

Beyond belief that a man who is in a position of village headman could do something so stupid. But as Thaiwrath says, he thinks he is above the law, laws are only for others not me.

Obviously thought he was above the law, being a "village headman".

His only punishment will probably be that he is now an "ex" village headman !

Mass gathering?

It looks more like a single family.

The news item refers to photographs. (plural) We've only been privy to one of them so how can we judge?

Throw the book at him. If they can find it, that will say. The book has a special power to just disappear when people with just a little bit of power is involved.

On the other hand, any book will suffice. They just have to throw it hard enough.

Emergency decree is there to try to keep people safe, and that brain dead village head, has done nothing but  put the elders lives at risk.

Just wondering about the personal/family history of this headman.

Is this a case where his family for some time/ perhaps 2 or more generations has been the headman/local politician etc., and an attitude of 'I'm special/my family is special' and we can therefore make our own rules.

Is this also a case where the family has developed power and has no hesitation whatever to just ignore national laws and regulations etc., even to the point where the local police are afraid of the family/the family control the police and the local bureaucrats.

Sadly It happens, sadly plenty of examples from the past.

Correct it does refer to photographs. Now you would imagine that in order to back up the story the writer of the article would use the photo which included the most people in it.

This looks like a single family.

"Throw the book" isn't violence. It means to prosecute him harshly, according to the law book.

Yes, I have resigned to the mental instability of too many lost souls that just feel the need to look down on Thailand. Right now, I am sitting wondering if they finally will go back where they came from after the borders open up again and stopp polluting this beautiful country with their negative presence.

Never, the investigation will be a whitewash, he'll be exonerated.

Laws are for the peasants.

indeed. and all ppl wear masks and seem to hold distance of eachother as well.

its not as if this village headman ordered a wild waterparty, he most likely organised a simple gathering of older ppl who asked for it, with masks and distance.

He dont deserve ridicule from a bunch of sextourists...

It was an insensitive traditional tribute gathering by the headman right now in the middle of a virtual lockdown and self isolation government policy, however well intended. People in his position should set an example to his village population, not abuse it.
