Trump to announce 'guidelines' on reopening U.S. economy Thursday

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that data suggested the country had passed the peak on new coronavirus infections, and said he would announce "new guidelines" for reopening the economy at a news conference on Thursday.

 

"The battle continues but the data suggests that the nation has passed the peak on new cases," Trump told his daily White House news briefing.

 

"While we must remain vigilant, it is clear that our aggressive strategy is working and very strongly working, I might add," Trump said.

 

The U.S. coronavirus death toll - the highest in the world - surged past 30,000 on Wednesday after doubling in a week.

 

The coronavirus crisis has hammered the U.S. economy, overshadowing Trump's efforts to win re-election in November.

 

The Republican president has been pushing to reopen U.S. businesses and end orders that Americans stay home to fight the spread of the disease.

 

During the lockdown, millions of Americans have lost their jobs and thousands of businesses have been forced to close their doors.

 

Trump claimed on Monday had the authority to overrule state governors and order businesses across the country to reopen.

Its blatantly shocking how many people don't understand how federalism/republic of states works. One minute they have to quickly find their fainting couch because trump isn't shutting down the country fast enough, next minute they are clutching their pearls at 'authoritarian' Trump for creating guidelines for opening up the country, stating he doesn't have the authority. Its all rather pathetic.

 

Bottom line is that the Fed is a backup, and local states have the responsibility to maintain preparedness and request to the Fed if they need anything. Going after a president is a stupid deflection when not a single person who needed a ventilator or medication or a bed didnt get one. 

 

Further, there is no way everyone can stay in their homes until a vaccine comes around. We have to learn to live with the disease or face a massive depression, riots, protests, etc. Its impossible. 

This pandemic has shown that the partisans will be partisans no matter now many bodies stack up. 

Yeah, the governors are already getting together to form a group that will decide when and how they reopen, regardless of what Trump says. It's like they're uniting the states for the benefit of the people. Too bad there's not ALREADY a governing body to do that.

My Thai sister in law living in Florida who is a huge supporter of trump now worships and loves watching Cuomo

Looks like Trump don't know diddly-squat about the basic constitutional foundations of the country he 'leads?' Nancy Pelosi isn't looking much better of late either. What sad sad place the US is. Such potential and yet 'we the people' haven't got a discerning brain cell between them. Ignorance and jingoism rules.

Handful of governors in the liberal blue states of the Northeast. And that's fine. There are 44 other states also deciding what to do independently of them. The Governor of Michigan has gone nuts and is doing her best to hand Trump a victory there. 

 

The places that take the most risk and move the fastest will recover the quickest. The tighter the controls the longer your state will languish. 

 

The sick and vulnerable need to stay inside for the sake of the healthy and not the other way around. The healthy need to go produce basically today to hold the ship together. This talk of shelter in place remaining until a vaccine is found is just nutty. 

 

We are at the point now where any good you could sell is now an essential service. Shutting down the garden centers of big box stores is one example of utter stupidity. The more power hungry your governor is the more your state will suffer. Get it wrong now your state may never recover again.

 

My Grandfather who is 90+ years old, stormed and took Okinawa when he served, was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice back then and says he is willing to do so now. He understands the situation. He remembers the day back then when he got the order that "It's time to go boys!"

Cuomo just announced tonight he is extending to May 15 and then to be determined by scientific metrics. Including his region. That's in defiance of 45's insane goal of May 1. If you open up too soon and too much it ends up backfiring big time in more deaths and the need to start all over again. A much better testing and tracing infrastructure needs to be built. That will take time and resources. Otherwise, more disaster.

Sorry, but I didn't see your posts when your president claimed "absolute authority" the other day and informed us all that HE'd be the one who makes the decisions. Did that nugget happen to pass you by? I can't seem to find your diatribe about how federalism/republic of states works there. Why not?

 

As to "not a single person who needed a ventilator or medication or a bed didn't get one", that's a straight up lie contradicted by dozens of published accounts from front-line workers at hospitals.

Very little SS contributions to the Government by employers.  Many  institutions have  extended 90 day grace periods(credit card purchases, mortgages , Insurence company policies, elected surgeries as a out Patients , just to mention a few,people and businesses , Ma and Pa shops ,must go back to work.

Time to take baby steps to reenact the best economy in the world and start getting back to a  new normal.

A truly great economy would endure this with hardly a noticeable blip. This has exposed what a flimsy, fragile economy this world has. One case in point - the last crash was 40 months ago. Banks make $3 billion PROFIT every quarter. If they saved $1 billion per quarter from the PROFITS, they'd have a boatload of money.

 

We need to re-evaluate what it is we want, not just rush back to a failing system.

The fact is many Democrats hate Trump more than the virus. Thus, their decisions are made through that prism. They literally want the economy as devastated as possible because they think they need it. Not bad logic, given their choice for the Democrat nominee. But as every scam to GET TRUMP, this one has a very high chance of backfiring. Blue states are generally the worse-hit.
