Sorry to disagree, but I worked for 15 years as a graphic artist which is what caused me to first purchase an Apple computer. The designer that I replaced had created everything in proprietary Apple fonts and the ownership didn't want to change to something Windows compatible. They preferred wasting a lot of money buying computers to suit the software. I HATED using the iMac or the MacBookPro for those tasks. It is so much easier and faster in Windows.

Don't be sorry! Windows works for you (and me, too!) and the Mac people? It works for them. It's much like the argument Pepsi vs Coke. Up to you.

I am sure it's possible to use a 10 year old Mac.

And I know it's possible to use a 10 year old Windows PC.

But don't expect from any of them that they will be able to run the newest software and don't expect any performance.

Let's not forget that things changed a lot.

Yes, 10 years ago we also had email and websites. But compare them to today. It's a night and day difference. And that is one of the reasons why old PCs are not able to handle the same things, like WWW and email, anymore. Because they are not the same anymore.

Look i.e. at Google in 2010 and now...

The top pic is how my ipad air looks. Just the way i like it, clean.

I prefer windows probably because i started on it. The gf has a mac and i have used it for about 6 months and just cant stand it. I only do basic stuff but it still drives me nuts.

Actually have gone right off apple. Had the iphone 4s when it first came out. Hated having to use the iphone store etc. Just too many hoops to jump thru and paying for apps etc.

I then moved to samsung phone, loved the ease of using it but not a long battery charge life. Now use vivo s9, very good camera and very long battery charge.

i still use ipad a little when lazing around, when it dies i will get a tablet non apple related.

Performance is always relative

I was using until recently a 2009 bought Wndows laptop with original components and the only reason I don't continue much with it is the screen has some marks on it that wont come off - otherwise I would have added an SSD. Still adequate for most tasks but I don't tend to play around with any graphics/video editing.

Oh and I am sticking with Win 7 for the forseeable.........

And writing this on an upgraded 2007 machine........

My biggest complaints about the Mac is the mouse.

First, a wireless mouse costs approximately $100 US, though it's been a while since I bought one, maybe prices have gone down. Regardless, NOT LONG AGO every Mac item cost $100 US, keyboard included.

Second, and most important, the feel wasn't the same as a Windows mouse. It was more difficult to move that graphic where I wanted it to, or to grab a specific part of a track in the music file.

Third, Apple made that damned mouse dependent on the Apple Batteries. I worked around it with tape and sticky note, but C'MON APPLE! Shame on you.

Macs are great for limited usage and for specialist programs that work best on a Mac - video/audio especially.

But for general all round use - nothing can beat Windows - some many programs/apps work with it - universal OS.

But until next version of Windows OS I am sticking with Win7 and maybe for a while.

Will it be Win11 or Win12.

Will MSoft like Apple have an OS for Computers and an OS for Phones/Devices.

Or will MSoft stick with the same OS for all - like Android.

I know they failed before - but I just cannot see MSoft letting that phone/device market go.

Nether is the daddy.

My 2014 Acer Chromebook is still working, has been dropped, abused, and never stopped working.

Never installed any anti-virus, it is built in.

Still download and watch TV shows and Movies, has full size HDMI to connect

Such a strange statement. On what is it based? I am running the latest version of Windows 10 on a thirteen year old laptop with 4GB of RAM and an SSD fitted.

So to which latest software are you referring?

Performance? How do you quantify that? I have four old laptops, from 2007, 2008 and 2009 and 2010. All are still in use.

The only issue with the OP's laptop, is that it is a pig for when it comes to wanting to fit an SSD.

Other than that, components are more than adequate for everyday usage.

You don't need to install anti-virus on Windows 10 either.

2014 isn't old. I'm posting from a laptop made in 2007. Post back regarding your ChromeBook in seven years. ????

It's right about the time that your ChromeBook will stop getting updates. Usually around 6.5 years. So your ChromeBook will soon be obsolete.

I didn't choose, because they both have their pros and cons.

I've been using both for a long time. I ran Mac labs in schools for years. Once I started using Win7, it became my main system. I hate Win10.

Apple have been flaky in both (overpriced) hardware and software for a long time, but are slowly getting their act together and making software to suit the user, rather than designers' egos (hello Jony).

I'm typing this on a recent MacBook Pro which is very nice. I still use a MacMini from 2011 which I have connected to a TV screen. Apple software is often frustrating to use and overall feature poor. I typically use the Apple software out of convenience, rather than choice. On Windows there is an app out there for every possible situation you can think of.

Separating iPhone management from iTunes was long overdue. Logic Pro X is great. Gaming on a Mac is a pain. Apple makes really crappy mouses. Always has. Bluetooth is often hit and miss.

Did I tell you I hate Win10?

I had a chromebook. I liked it but regarded it as a fashion accessory.

they aren't built to last thats for sure, not like my mighty Fujitsu lifebook ????

LOL. I hated Win 10 until I used it regularly as well as Win 7 simultaneously. It's a learning curve. On the other hand, I would go back to a Windows XP platform in a New York minute!

Isn't that a hardware thing vs a software thing?

Well, as long as I stumble over questions in forums like: does that run on my mac, can I use it with my mac, I will stick to Windows.

For work I have to use an iPad (2018 modell). That thing is sluggish compared to my privat Huawei tablet, but did cost probably twice as much.

Which Mac device do you have? Some devices from 2010 should still be able to run at least High Sierra, macOS 10.13.x

If it is one of the models that allow you to swap the HDD for an SSD without the need for an adaptor, even better.

Even if you need an adaptor, it might still be worth it, if you want to keep it useful.

It's a learning curve.

My theory is that software engineers need to keep updating software to keep their jobs. We don't need change just for the sake of it, and it's a huge pain for users to migrate. It's mostly younger people that drive change, as I'm sure most here would agree. I just want to do stuff, not constantly have to fiddle with software settings. Over several years I tinkered with, and tuned my Windows 7 environment to suit my way of working. Apple just expects me to do it the Apple way, and that's it.

Remember iMovie HD and Quicktime 7 (Pro)? Both brilliantly simple but feature rich and both gone.

I also grieve for the slow demise of Picasa and Web Albums, both brilliant, feature rich pieces of software. Thanks Google (trying to be the another Apple). Who uses Google to manage their images, or uses Hangouts? Not me.

"Mac Vs Windows. Who's the daddy? "

None, they are brother and sister. Fighting when they were young and living on their own now they are grown up.

Their Daddy, Mister Unix, is happy they are doing well now. Not always on the right path but they will always be one from his seed like their halfbrother Linux which is a real rascal with a lot of children.

- I am resident on all the three worlds , and was visitor to their far family of whom are now extant.

Those Msoft update things puzzle me, ive never seen any difference by allowing them to update. They must be for Nurds not the average Joe. My interest started when i retired and saw Need For Speed back in 1999 ,prior to that My Wages dept had one for Accounting and Invoices. It was made by  Wang who closed  just after i bought it, i never went near the thing.

Their phones are great, can't deny that.

I couldn't imagine ever going back to a Nokia now ????

I used to be a Windows user but was never a big fan.  A friend convinced me to use an iPhone.  Once I saw the capabilities, I started switching to Mac.  The integration between desktop and iPhone was so easy and powerful I couldn't resist.  To start off I learned how to install Mac OSX on my own Intel hardware.  That was workable but updating to new OS versions required too much effort.  In the end I bought a 2015 iMac and have been almost Windoze free since then.  I only have one USB device essential to my work and the US Social Security calculator software that require it.

Good point, Metropolitian.

I have a late 2013 27" Mac for personal use which is still going strong. We have iPhones, Apple TV, and an iPad that all sync seamlessly.

On the other hand, trying to work from home on a Mac with my employer's Windows-based user desktop interface was a royal pain.  My employer has been pushing hard for more robust contingency plans for the past two years and all was fine when it was working from home for the odd day here and there but then they ramped up the pressure for more remote working days.  Funnily enough, they were more concerned with terrorism than viruses but it turned out to be a shrewd move, nonetheless.

Anyway, last year I purchased a decent PC tower, two 27" Samsung daisy chain monitors [I prefer two monitors over one giant monitor], comfortable office chair, desk, headphones, webcam and external speakers.  It wasn't cheap and is now set up in my home office.

Now I'm working at home 10-11 hour days for the past four weeks [only another three weeks to go] and glad I got the set up right before lockdown was imposed.  I suspect many of my colleagues didn't invest in good time and are now in complete agony having to sit there in less favourable conditions for many hours.  As the Thais say, up to you.
