Ed Sheeran has supported staff at his London bar by refusing to furlough them during the coronavirus crisis.

The singer is a part owner of the Notting Hill haunt Bertie Blossoms, alongside longtime manager Stuart Camp.

Despite closing its doors in March to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Sheeran and Camp have ensured that their employees – including waiters, bar staff, chefs and kitchen assistants – won’t be out of work for the foreseeable future.

The business has turned down the chance to furlough staff using the new scheme which sees the government paying 80% of an individual’s salary, and the company having the option of paying out the additional 20%.

He can afford it from his pocket change.

I agree and it's a credit to him for doing so.  I dare not mention another celebrity recently highlighted here who was quite disregarding to her staff (or crew).

If you actually dared to mention the name then your post might have more context.

Otherwise, just hearsay and unfounded gossip. Just like so many so called journalist/reporters who never substantiate any storey.

No matter. He is doing it. Many very wealthy people, especially here in Thailand, are continuing their cheap, stingy, tight fisted (ตระหนี่มาก) ways, and utterly refuse to help their own people, despite proclaiming to love their nation like no other. Same elsewhere.

Some are stepping up. And kudos to the ones who open their hearts to the plight of the lower income folks, who are getting their butts kicked by the insanity of this prolonged economic shutdown.

But if he did name them he would run the risk of being labelled homophobic just for printing the truth.

"Refused"?

Was the government beating his door down insisting he furlough them?

Journalism is more than copying and pasting a press release.

Ever heard of the term ‘to refuse an offer’?

I read he has about 15 staff. It’s a nice gesture given the likes of VB but he appears to be a decent guy in general so not surprising.

haha, yea maybe, or possibly he saw how VB, and other millionaires, have been pilloried, and made a wise decision. call me cynical...

No doubt. Paying 15 employees a pidly amount and getting all the positive publicity vs not and getting the VB treatment. No brainer.

Easy to be cynical (it'd effect his image etc), but Sheeran is a decent bloke and that is unlikely to enter his mind. The guy worked his way up from where his employees are currently at. Folk handed it to them on a platter typically do not display this kind of generosity.
