No victories this Labour Day

Labour Day or “May Day” was first recognised in Thailand in 1932 under prime minister Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, though it was only endorsed as National Workers Day in 1956 during the reign of King Rama VIII.

 

In the following year, May 1 was named National Labour Day, but it did not become a public holiday until 1974.

 

However, this year, May Day is very different in Thailand. With nearly a million people out of work and thousands getting their salaries cut as businesses struggle under lockdown measures placed to contain the spread of Covid-19, workers have had little reason to celebrate Labour Day.

 

At this point, the government and the private sector need to step up and find ways to generate revenue so people can start earning an income again.

With all due respect, I think that you will find that King Rama IX was on the throne in 1956!

I'd say a few people not eligible for the handout applied for it anyways.

Just goes to show how much the government underestimated the employment provided by tourism

There was a VICTORY, it showed up plainly Government Control over the people sadly it also showed lack of Empathy the Government shows towards its people .

A sort of hollow victory , one which the Government will trumpet missing the point that Millions are really struggling

This is taken from the Nation article. To say it makes my blood boil is an understatement.

Nearly 1m unemployed? More like 20 million, including those who continue to sponge off their parents. Only thousands of people have their salary cut?... What about all those people who have no jobs now and have returned to their provinces of origin?

How does the 'private sector' step up? There are no customers. You can only sell stuff if someone will buy it. No one has any money, as no one has a job. No one can buy anything. Can't buy anything, got no money to make anything.
