The number of Bangkok commuters using boats doubled to 10,000 daily as soon as restrictions were eased, Deputy Transport Minister Athirat Rattanaseth said.

Hence, he has ordered the Marine Department to impose preventive measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, including sending boats out every three to five minutes between 6.30 and 9am and 4 to 7pm, increasing the number of boats from 40 to 60, ensuring passengers maintain social distancing, putting more officials on duty and setting up CCTVs.

So far, the piers under the department’s jurisdiction have been following strict preventive measures by setting up checkpoints to screen passengers and provide them with hand-sanitising gel.

The social distancing measures have been also applied to ensure passengers maintain a distance of one to two metres and wear face masks at all times.
