BANGKOK – The exports of instant noodles soared in the first quarter of this year, especially in Southeast Asia, thanks to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, according to the Department of Trade Negotiations.

Auramon Supthaweethum, director-general of the department, said the pandemic caused people to stay home and thus increasingly demand dried and instant food that could be stored for a long period.

Instant noodles were among the products that met present demand because their preparation was quick, their prices were cheap, their flavors were numerous and they were generally available and could be kept for a long time, she said.

Ms Auramon said Thailand’s instant noodle exports grew by 11% year-on-year in the first quarter of this year and their export value amounted to US$57.8 million.

It is known as the Mama noodles index, the brisker the sales of this product mean people are getting poorer and unable to buy better food...

The ingredient list for these instant noddles contains far to many unhealthy items.

As the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns said "Tis an ill wind that blaes naebody any guid" ! Hopefully porridge sales are booming ????

Sodium amongst other additives which will definitely hurt the system....you can read into that and let your mind wander

The bag has as much nutritional value as the noodles, and in the long run is probably less harmful.

I guess we all share a common humanity in the sense that every culture has a penchant for some really nasty foodstuffs, despite alternatives being almost as cheap and much more healthy.

Beans and rice? Stir fried veggies? Swish in an egg? And no added MSG or sodium.

Certainly beats package noodles or Twinkies.

Twinkies are a mainstay.  You need to carry a package of them with you, and if in the US you murder someone you can use the Twinkie Defense.  It worked in San Francisco.....

Trump the d.ck would say sodium is good for Covid protection so eat yes eat Mama, ah no wait a bit he has to buy the factory before he endorses it

People seem to think the only way these are eaten is by dumping in every bit of the little flavor/oil/salt/chili packets.  That is certainly how some do it, but you can think of the packets as the most possible to add...and make it with just half the salty stuff...and you literally cut the sodium in half.  I laugh when I see marketers saying "50% sodium reduced!".  It isn't ducking hard to "50% sodium reduce" it yourself.

Also, reading sodium levels on an item where the half cup of salty broth is typically tossed out is a bit misleading.  If you are going to drink every drop (like we usually do in the west), then you are getting much more sodium than most Thai's (who typically fish out the noodles only).

SO THIS increase is going to compensate Thailand for the loss of tourists....IS IT ????
