Safety checks are underway at Bangkok’s cinemas, which have been permitted to reopen after more than two months.

The Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning has checked security systems at theatres in Seacon Bangkae, and expects to check 57 other cinemas across the Greater Bangkok area by September.

Cinemas were among the venues ordered to shut after the government announced a state of emergency to contain the spread of Covid-19 on March 26.

Pornchai Sangsri, a senior civil engineer at the department’s Building Control Bureau, said the plan was to visit 58 cinemas across the city to ensure they were safe for customers to use.

“We will check security systems, such as backup power, fire alarms and emergency exits, aiming to be finished by September,” he said.

“Meanwhile, operators must also implement Covid-19 preventive measures to gain confidence among customers.”

He added that the cinema operator at Seacon Bangkae has implemented satisfactory measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, such as arranging seats to maintain social distancing and disinfecting theatres before and after the film ends.

It's a pity they never apparently did this check regularly before, otherwise they'd know the situation already.

Surprised all the 'unavailable' seats haven't been unscrewed and removed, to avoid any illicit canoodling.

Maybe need to check the ventilation system that doesn't recirculate any virus contaminated air from either inside/outside the cinema theater and/or increase room circulation volumes away from the audience areas.
