My company is about to start exporting products. We will ship using courier services only (TNT, DHL, FedEx, etc).

I spent the morning at the Revenue Department with a very friendly and helpful person who explained exactly what we had to do in order to fully comply with the Revenue Department's regulations regarding exports.

I then spent 2 incredibly frustrating hours at the Customs Department with half a dozen surly and unhelpful people trying to find out what we have to do in order to be an exporter. I ended up with nothing more that a slip of paper directing me to the Customs Department website, after which I downloaded about 30 files that look like an absolute bureaucratic nightmare. (I speak and read Thai fluently, by the way.)

Can anyone explain what we have to do with the Customs Department in order to export legally using courier services? Even better, can anyone refer me to a lawyer or adviser who can explain and then do whatever paperwork is required?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi,

I’m using a company called Wavetech Clearance Servic Co., Ltd which is based out of Bangkok. They are the main clearance agent for FedEx, but they also handle normal Thai Postal packages clearances.

You have to visit their office in order to apply for a card. You should have one of your Thai staff call them at 02-9822536 to get all the details as you need quite a lot of paperwork to get started.

You can also read a bit more about this on FedEx website at,

http://www.fedex.com/th/about/local/servic...n07.html?link=4

Once you get signed up it’s very easy to use them. You just fax the required documents for each shipment and they will do the rest. They will send you the bill for the export fees directly.

Tompa,

I agree it's very easy once you register with them, they do everything for a small fee, it's much easier than doing it yourself. I use FedEx and find them very good. I'm interested to know what the Revenue Dept. required from you in order to fully comply.

The definitive document (ป. 97/2543 available at http://www.rd.go.th/accessibility/3557.0.html) has 16 different sets of requirements, depending on the exact circumstances of the export. I suggest that you print it out and show it to your accountant, who should be able to quickly tell you into which of the 16 categories your exports fall and exactly what documents you need to be eligible for 0% VAT treatment. By the way, I never go to the district tax office to get information/advice about things like this - I go to the Legal Office of the Revenue Department at their headquarters building on Soi Ari. You have to speak Thai, but you get correct information that you can rely on.

Thanks for the info, however I get an 'Object Not Found' notice when I click or paste the link.

Sorry, somehow I included the closing parenthesis in the link. This one works.

As by Jan 2007 the customs office was supposed to go paperless. It did unfortunately not happen. Nevertheless, the "Yellow Cards" are no longer issued, which means that if you don't have one, you have to submit for each and every shipment the whole bunch of company documents to the customs office - signed and stamped of course.

If you need more info about shipping, you can send me a pm, we are in this business. :o
