BANGKOK(NNT) - To assist rubber farmers, the Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, chaired the signing ceremony of an agreement to use rubber in road construction.

Gen. Prayut used the occasion to praise the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives as well as Prince of Songkla University, the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research, the Rubber Plantation Cooperative Fund and the Engineering Institute of Thailand under Royal Patronage, as they jointly developed a rubber-based road paving method, which also increases the safety of roadways. The achievement is the result of government initiated studies into road accidents and fatalities and has the added benefit of aiding the nation’s rubber growers.

The Ministry of Transport is to also cover concrete barricades with natural rubber. The method is certified by the Institute of Scientific and Technological Research and was tested in South Korea, proving to be effective at reducing the adverse effects of road accidents. The covering process is to take place between 2020 and 2022, encompassing 12,282 kilometers of road, utilizing 1,063,651 rubber trees or about 1 million tons of rubber sap, accounting for 71 percent of growers’ income or just over 30 billion baht.

  • This must be a new government initiative to reduce the number of road accident deaths by making all vehicles bounce harmlessly in the event of an collision.

Money to be made? Rubber stamp for rubber roads.

This will be interesting to see; we already know that rubber increases safety and protection in the sex industry.

I wonder what the farmers will do should the market price of latex recover and rise significantly? Quite possible given this agreement will effectively remove some 10% of global production.

The idea of adding rubber to roads is generally one that recycles old tyres rather than using raw latex.

You will no longer need motorcycle helmets with rubber roads, as you will just bounce off. Hope they don't use the Superball formula.

No more helmets needed?

Good idea. A softer, bouncy road surface could save hundreds of lives a year...

Yes that was a way of recycling old tyres at one time.....wonder if it is still being used?

Another good initiative implemented by Khun Prayut Chan O Cha,  job creation which is badly needed as well as a reliable source of income for rubber tree farmers.

But will there be enough rubber left for Johnny boy?

I can just imagine it now.

Rubber roads and worn rubber tyres on cars, buses, trucks and motor bikes.

Some heavy rain combined with greasy oily road surface.

Despite all the jokes its actually quite serious method across the world now. It is a rubber and asphalt mix that goes into making the road. Tarmac one of the worlds biggest road companies are involved in its development.

Bob's Your Uncle.
That will get the road deaths back up to 65+/day from the lowly 35/day that started out the year!   But remember - wear a face mask while your driving!!!  Safety first!

The one I use is worn down to the treads. Should I change it?
