The Tropical 5 Star Island of Phuket will be the crown jewel for their wealthy visitors and only the 5 star all inclusive Hotels will be in Play.  No room at the trough for those normal hotels, shops or restaurants.  I can see where the money is going. Straight into someone's pockets who has invested in the 5 star resorts...

If Phuket is the crown jewel then they are screwed.

I stayed at the Centara Grand there, not bad, but the beach is terrible, the city is forgettable.

The rich have a choice. They would never choose Phuket over the Seychelles or Bora-Bora.

Not enough quality in Phuket. Even the Centara Grand can't light a candle to top resorts in Nusa Dua Bali.

  • Although they may spend 5 times the amount of sexpats..it doesn't create 5 times as many jobs which is what's needed most

I suspect that the Chinese Government is not encouraging its subjects to travel anywhere at the moment.

my guess is that they are pretty tapped out after supporting local teams... their first priority... then food and housing and taxes... own a vehicle and it is all gone...

The problem is it does not reside in one person. The plebs only have financial clout in huge shoals, like little fish. So an individual pleb can not harness it. However, if you look how footballers are financed, by tv money, which comes from advertising, which comes from the general public, you quickly realise that the biggest financial clout comes from the big mass. They just can not direct it, use it. Others can direct and use it.

The same applies everywhere, btw, even politically the plebs have enormous power, as we saw just now. They made everyone bend the knee. I firmly believe that is why the ruling classes subscribe to the leftist agenda across the board, because they know if they did not pay billions in welfare, the plebs would come and kick their heads in and take what they want. They could easily do so, as we just saw.

Insatiable greed! The wealthy can afford to go to much more accommodating places than Thailand!

  • Popular Post

First came to Thailand with a budget of $20/day; now I guess I am considered “wealthy”, and spend pretty much money when I am back.  Never would have happened if I couldn’t have done it (and made my connections to the place) with a backpack. Targeting the wealthy is a dead-end when you can’t really properly accommodate them.  You are also stuck with the need to constantly find new people.

Thailand should diversify away from tourism, but there are a huge number of hurdles to doing that.  Targeting the rich only helps the uber-wealthy within Thailand... which is where/why backpackers help.

Exactly. What does Thailand have to entice wealthy holiday makers? This is not exactly the French Riveria

Let's hold Mr. Phiphat to task once the first planeloads of low-end "zero dollar tour" Chinese tourist herds touch down in Thailand. And I have a hunch it won't be very long from now.

Also: What is Mr. Phiphat going to do with those literally thousands of hotels that are simply not geared towards high-end tourism plus tens of thousands of businesses ranging from restaurants to souvenir shops that likewise are not catering to the wealthy? Just wave his magic wand and make them all disappear?

Could have in 1949 before it changed name to Beijing.

Shows where people are in their knowledge of the world here.

SOLVED:

farang fund.  if rich, donating 30,000 baht is nothing.  you get personalized bracelet.  color determines bank balance.  can change based on balance.

if poor backpacker, the bracelet will turn into acid and poison.  lol

IF you are super wealthy, you go to super wealthy places. d'uh.  paris or phayao?  ah, ok.  the non-super wealthy but still wealthy can find their girls in any country.  the poor need the big signs with obvious prices, since their budget is fixed.

i like it when people say they go to pattaya for the beaches or las vegas for the buffet or bangkok for cheap street food.   ah, no.

Seems to me I've heard this story before....

The rich people who typically want to come here are those who have become rich, or are coming rich, thru criminal endeavors.

Because if they were legit rich, they wouldn't be picking Thailand and instead would be picking some other place that has facilities, services and amenities up to the standards expected by rich folks.

Mallorca tried this without success. There are just not enough rich people. The plebs are the masses, it's where the real money is. Who do you think finances the millions footballers earn? The plebs. It comes from advertising, ie products bought by the plebs.

The plebs have huge financial power but don't know it.

They tried 10+ years ago to make Koh Chang an up-market destination, I don't think that worked.

The pandemic provides an opportunity to reset the sector, which had become reliant on Chinese groups and backpackers. Once the country’s borders are reopened and so-called travel bubbles are agreed upon, marketing efforts will be geared toward wealthier individuals who want holidays with minimal risks, Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said in an interview.

OMG -what is this guy smokin

Thailand is an unsafe corrupt polluted dump - calling it 3rd world is being kind

Your mind is playing tricks on you if you believe everyone is a sex-pat who visits Thailand or lives here.  Time to really look at the bigger picture, and not be jaded by stories you believe are fact instead of the fiction they are.

Put sex industry out of sight and then maybe MAYBE some high class tourists might come.

I live here so for me the reasons to be here are entirely different than for a tourist. If i was an upper class tourist , thailand would not be in my list of goto desitnations.

post of the month - you nailed it

I'm not sure centara grand in Karon is a good reference for evaluating how Phuket is fit for the riches. Maybe you spend some nights at Amanpuri (30k/night), the Surin, Sri panwa or some hi end hotel or resort in Laguna or Layan, rent a villa in Ayara or millionaire's miles where Chinese live like in Beverly Hills. then you might change your opinion!

I agree anyway with the fact that this is a nonsense propaganda, just to fill newspapers with bs. For 95% of tourists Thailand is a good destination for its convenience.

Thailand has nothing special or unique to offer the wealthy, Angelina Jolie might have thought it cool to get a few tattoos and a few footballers et al but its got nothing to offer the real wealthy.

True Wealthy arnt interested in second quality only the best. Thailands not got top class much of anything from what I could tell that isnt beaten hands down by dozens of other locations around the world for pretty much everything... Dont get me wrong i love Thailand but its not a place id bother with if totally loaded for tourism.

they won't appreciate having wear an oxygen tank and mask to breath in the toxic pollution provided by by all major cities

Apologies for stating the obvious but Thailand just cannot offer this. From a high chance of getting Dengue fever, bitten by a rabid dog, getting a staph infection or killed on the roads. Thailand needs to take a step back and market what they are good at, or at least competent at, and it's not offering luxury holidays to millionaires.

Now ! If I had pots of Money ( which I dont ), the very last place on the Planet that I would vacation would be Thailand.

I can imagine it now.

A Beautiful Sunset ( or it would be if the Sky was not obscured by Toxic Pollution ). Sitting on the Veranda ( with a high degree chance of contracting Dengue Fever from a Mosquito ), sipping a glass of Bubbly ( Ridiculously overpriced ) , and listening to ... Dogs barking and Howling, and breathing in the fragrant fumes from a trash fire in the close vicinity.

All this after a day of sailing the Private Motor Launch around the Gulf among all the raw Sewage and rafts of Trash, and then a relaxing drive back to the House, trying to warn the Driver of each hazard to avoid if possible.

Its tough at the top.

And they don't mate with 5 times the number of their females, supporting their whole families and cargo of buffaloes....Why they didn't think about this 40 years ago? These guys are pure genius.

Oh gawd, like a wealthy person would want to really go to thailand.

- the roads are awful

-beaches are polluted and crowded

-sewer smell

-bangkok is horrible unless you're chinese on a  buying orgy.

Luxury travel does exist, but they go to exclusive islands and resorts.

This is the usual gobble-gook from the leaders that changes second by second.  No compass, just babbling.

The allure of Thailand is the value. Take away the value and most will come elsewhere for vacation.

Target the wealthy! Phipat had better move fast as there is severe competition.

I understand that Blackpool is about to do the same.
