Dixie Chicks drop Dixie from name; country group tries to 'meet the moment'

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country music trio Dixie Chicks on Thursday changed its name to simply The Chicks, the latest move in U.S. pop culture to drop associations with the nation's racist past.

 

"We want to meet the moment," the band said on its website, without further explanation.

 

The word "Dixie" is associated with the U.S. southern states where chattel slavery was legal and which seceded from the union and fought as the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. This month, country band Lady Antebellum changed its name to Lady A, also because of the associations of the Antebellum period with slavery.

 

The Dixie Chicks formed in Texas in 1989, and became one of the biggest names in country music. The female band was shunned by country radio stations in 2003 after singer Natalie Maines said she did not endorse the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

 

The band responded in 2006 with the Grammy-winning single "Not Ready to Make Nice."

 

Musicians, television shows and movies have all been forced to re-examine the messages they are sending out in the wake of a national reckoning over systemic racism in the United States triggered by mass protests against police brutality against Black people.

 

The classic Civil War movie "Gone with the Wind" returned to the HBO Max streaming platform on Wednesday, accompanied by an introduction acknowledging the brutality of slavery.

Yes slavery was legal in the south but also in northern states and the war did not start over slavery, Jefferson Davis said it was about freedom and Lincoln said it was about preserving the Union. Dixie is also the best American tune of the 19th century, even Lincoln liked it (written by a northerner anyway) and asked for it to be played at a theatre he was in when he got the news of Lees surrender. People should be proud of Dixie, it represents southern heritage and a people who stood up against tyranical government, they saw the war as the second war of independance, nothing to be ashamed about.

The pandering to BLM is out of control. You switch on a PS4 you get lectured about black lives matter. You watch football they're all made to kneel and wear shirts with the words "Black Lives Matter". This should all be documented.

 

I say in all seriousness, people in Nazi Germany were not subjected to this much propaganda.

 

All attempts to tarnish Dixie are bound for failure. With music like American Trilogy evoking the memory of Dixie, it's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever hear.

 

As for the Dixie Chicks, they're long past it now anyway, Natalie Maines is 45 years old. They'd have to pay me to watch them.

Next in line for re-naming, Dixie cups ????

All they are doing with this idiotic PC madness is storing up for the biggest back lash we have ever seen. Faulty logic often crops up about the civil war. Nobody claims slavery was a decent institiution, but many like to make out it was only white southerners who were involved when the whole country was built on slavery and 11 presidents up until 1860 had been slave owners at some time.

Freeing the slaves has become a smokecreen excuse for the war when at the time it was not seen as such. If it was about slavery why did not Lincoln free the slaves in the north at the start? and how could the south be involed in a war to keep salvery when the Union had not threatended to end it? Lincoln never freed any slaves in the north and famously said if he could have saved the Union without freeing any slaves or some and not others he would have.

Slavery could have been ended as it was in most other coutries- peacefully, but Lincoln decided an invasion and laying waste to his own country was the only way to go. As for escaped freed slaves making it to the north they were refused entry to some states and put into camps in others, sometimes refered to as the first concentration camps. Had he lived Lincoln had a plan to ship many back to Liberia whether they liked it or not.

Slavery was evil but a war to force the CSA back into the Union which they legally left was also, cost at least 620k lives and ruined the country. Sherman of course beat, raped and split families apart as well on his Georgia terror campaign. It was not all one side bad the other all rightious and heroic. Freeing slaves (in theory) was a tactic to win the war, and preserve the Union not the cause.
