Thai FDA preparing to register vaccine as two research teams race ahead

The Thai Food and Drug Administration is preparing to register any Covid-19 vaccines that are successfully developed in the country.

 

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is monitoring a total of 142 coronavirus vaccine research programmes worldwide, six of which are being conducted in Thailand.

 

Of the global total, 13 programmes are at the advanced stage of human trials, while the remaining 129 are at the animal-trial or laboratory stage.

 

Thailand’s most advanced Covid-19 vaccine programmes are at Chulalongkorn University (mRNA prototype vaccine) and BioNet-Asia (DNA prototype vaccine).

 

Both prototypes have been tested successfully on animals and are now set to be tested in humans.

 

A Thai Covid-19 vaccine may be available by early next year, Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reported last week.

 

FDA Deputy Secretary-General Surachoke Tangwiwat said his agency has been in close contact with the Thai research programmes right from the start.

 

“We have monitored every procedure and step, and have also laid plans for the production of [successful Covid-19] vaccines in the future,” he said.

 

He added that the FDA was being understanding towards scientists who wanted to skip some steps in the vaccine research for reasons of urgency.

Urgency to make money? or due to the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) and how that works, giving preference to pharmaceutical companies who pay the most, not who has the most effective, tested & safest product, basically ‘pay-for-play’.

Least "we" can be reassured that the vaccine after years of testing will be safe! ????

Someone suggested 600 - 900 baht a shot.  If they can convince a few million people to take it the payback will be great!  If they convince the government to make it compulsory......the party will last for weeks!

They will struggle same as all the other countries where low Covid numbers.

 

I'm surprised they don't intentionally try to infect someone with Covid whose had the vaccine, it seems it's outlawed as no country is doing it

Thats not such an outlandish suggestion, many countries are considering doing this. Its called "human challenge" trials. There's guidance on its use by WHO here https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/WHO-2019-nCoV-Ethics_criteria-2020.1

I also suspect that China is currently carry out human challenge trials on its military.

Of course the real need for speed is the danger that the virus will eventually die out naturally, and then no one will need a vaccine, serious money could be lost.

 

Expecting many politicians worldwide will be pushing for compulsory vaccination, then you'll see them retire to high paying Pharma boards later...
