10 ways to avoid a hangover

A hangover occurs when the body becomes dehydrated and the blood sugar level is depleted due to drinking an excessive amount of alcohol. However don't think that mixing sugary drinks with your alcohol will help. In reality, diluting your drink with sugar will only make your hangover worse, as you will probably end up drinking more, and because the sugar in your liver will slow down the healing process.

That being said, we now present to you 10 ways to both help prevent hangovers and recover from a night of heavy boozing.

1. Eat before you drink. Make sure to fill your stomach with food, preferably something fatty to help absorb the alcohol. Fruit with vitamin B and C are also known to help slow down the effects of lost nutrients.

2. Drink milk. Drinking milk beforehand will coat your stomach and help absorb the alcohol you will ingest.

3. Drink plenty of water. As hangovers are caused by dehydration, drinking water will lessen the effects and prepare your body for the torture it is about to endure.

4. Avoid Salt. Salt is a diuretic and will speed up the dehydration process. Keep this in mind when drinking margaritas.

5. Avoid dark drinks and wine. When drinking, avoid dark drinks such as red wine and whiskey. Since many of you can't avoid whiskey, try mixing it with only soda or water, which will help to keep you hydrated. Avoid mixing whisky with cola and tonic at all costs as this will have an effect on your sugar level. Believe it or not, the best liquors to drink are clear spirits such as vodka and gin as they have less impurity. Also, try to drink as much water as you can while partying, although we know this is probably unlikely.

6. Drink the same type of alcohol. Mixing alcohols is not proven to have an effect on a hangover. However, there will be a greater chance that you will end up drinking more than usual.

7. Replace lost nutrients. Before bed, make sure you drink a large glass of water and try to take some vitamins to replace lost nutrients, preferably vitamins B and C.

8. Take an aspirin. If you have a headache, make sure to take an aspirin. Do not take a paracetamol or ibuprofen as they may aggravate your liver when combined with alcohol.

9. Avoid sugary and fatty food the day after. Even though your body has low sugar levels, eating too much sugar can cause an even worse effect than gradually replacing the lost glucose. Try to eat fruit and starchy foods with natural sugars instead. Also, avoid drinking coffee, as it only makes you more dehydrated. Instead, try some herbal tea.

10. Don't drink alcohol when you wake up. As crazy as it sounds, some people have found that drinking alcohol in the morning, or having some "hair of the dog that bit you," eases the pain of the hangover with a new euphoria of drunkenness. This is probably the worst thing to do, as the next hangover could even more of a disaster.

In the end, there is no cure for the punishment your body must endure. The best advice is always the same. Drink less.
