The Finance Ministry has dismissed a rumour that the government is planning to reduce the medical allowance of civil servants in order to fight the Covid-19 crisis.

Wilawan Phayanoi, deputy director-general of the ministry’s Comptroller General Department, cautioned people not to believe the gossip, which began circulating on social media last week.

“There is a rumour spreading that over the next few months civil servants will only be eligible for 65 per cent of what they used to receive in medical allowances,” she said on Friday (July 3).

“According to the rumour, the government needs money to pay debts it has accumulated while rolling out relief measures during the Covid-19 situation, meaning civil servants should brace for budgetary cutbacks and possible downsizing.”

“The Comptroller General's Department insists that the rumour is not true and that civil servants as well as their eligible family members will continue receiving the same medical allowance as before,” said Wilawan. “If there is to be any change in the benefits scheme, the department will make a public announcement before the change takes effect.”

“Please do not believe this rumour as it will only lead to panic and create negative perceptions towards the Thai government and economy,” she added.

I remember last year talking to a University student who was studying to be a physical education teacher.
I asked why she wanted to be a teacher, straight answer was " because I can take care of my parents medical bills" if i become a civil servant !!

They want any job they can get with a Uniform as it provides, in most cases, a guaranteed Pension after 25 years service and generous assistance with Medical Bills.   Usually if all else fails they become a Teacher of one kind or another; one of the reasons you meet so many 'Teachers' here, whereas it's not very common in our own countries to meet so many people who claim to be 'Teachers' .

Indeed. That's the only reason I read the topic. Almost all of MIL's medical expenses are being "taken care of" by BIL, who's a retired government officer. If there cuts, guess I'll be asked for some support. Rather like things the way they are.

Yes, the medical coverage is for the parents, spouse and children. My wife cover's my medical bills - unfortunately it doesn't cover dental implants! My las medical bill was 20 baht (the doctor fee), down from about 2000 baht.

Nothing to do with the Junta; at least not the current one.  Uniforms and Benefits have been ongoing here for more than 40 years.

Doubt it has much to do with supporting "the junta". Not like it was much different under the previous governments.
