Security increased in Yala’s Muang district to brace for insurgent attacks

Security, in the Muang district of Thailand’s southern border province of Yala, has been stepped up, and Buddhist communities have been warned to exercise extra caution and watch out for strangers, as security authorities are bracing for possible attacks by southern insurgents.

People entering the district township by car, motorcycle and public transport, are being subjected to searches and identification checks by police and military personnel manning roadblocks on all the roads leading to the township.

Intelligence sources said that some insurgents have sneaked into the district, possibly to carry out attacks on soft targets.

Meanwhile this morning (Wednesday), a para-military ranger was shot dead, in an attack believed to be by insurgents, as he was riding a motorcycle back to his command post in Raman district of Yala, after finishing his business in Thung Yang Daeng district of neighboring Pattani province.

The victim was identified as Nikorn Sombatthong, attached to the 41st para-military battalion.  He was murdered as he arrived in front of Ratprachanukroh 41 School, in Tambon Wang Phaya, Raman district.

So sad  that  now the  fear  and  restrictions directed  at  personal safety are relaxed   that  there  begins   new  cowardly remote assault  on  people who have  no political influence on a selfishly  indoctrinated political agenda.

I can believe and  understand the original  grievances involved  in this  issue  but there remains  little  sympathy  for the  methodology  in what is  being excused  as justifiable objection.

May not be that simple.  Up north, they call them land grabs, drug wars, and business disputes when people are gunned down or bombed out.

Down south, they blame it on Muslim insurgents to garner sympathy around the world.  More often than not, it's corrupt BKK tied politicians, grabbing land that local families have lived on and farmed for generations.  Or drug cartels gunning down threats like police and soldiers.

Relaxed personal safety?

The 'South' has been under a continuous State of Emergency since the 2014 military coup. That alone invigorates an insurgency.

But since then the Prayut regime seems to tolerate a moderate level of insurgent attacks as long as not directky against military commands. ISOC has (it appears) largely withdrawn troops from the region as it claims insurgency violence has  allegedly tappered off. Thus, leaving significant insurgency resistance to local paramilitary that sometimes operates out of Buddhist wats.

My reference to personal safety  was directed at  mitigations  for Covid-19 which has been reported to have until now seemingly  and not so coincidentally suppressed  insurgent acts of  violence due to an agreed ceasefire.

I am not  unaware of the overall complexity of issues in the region but find it notable that strict enforced measures indirectly related to those is demonstrably effective in/has been of an ironic beneficial side effect.

So go ahead and  jump on my head for my opinion.
