Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry checks on development of new coconut species

 

 

Surat Thani (NNT) - The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mananya Thaiset, has surveyed the development of a new species of coconut in Surat Thani province, being expedited after supermarkets in the United Kingdom discontinued the purchase of Thai coconut products following accusations of animal abuse by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

 

The Department of Agriculture is developing a hybrid species of coconut, which would be able to grow at a rate of two thousand fruits per 0.16 hectares in a year. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives also visited a demonstration farm, to see how coconuts are collected for export, noting processing of the coconuts is 90 percent done by a human workforce.

 

Mananya indicated demand for coconuts has risen consistently for the past 3 years, both domestically and globally, which is why the ministry is supporting domestic growing. The species being used for development is currently in high demand, with over a million trees on back order, prompting government assistance to accelerate production.

On the situation in the UK, Ms. Mananay said it is a matter of cultural difference, reminding people that Thailand has an Animal Protection Act and that most monkeys used for collecting coconuts are used by households, not at the industrial level.

Ahh these will be the self picking ones that don't need monkeys of the hairy or none hairy variety to pick em.... timely really who would have thought it!!

Training monkeys to pluck coconuts is certainly not cruel. No beating, starving or any sort of pain involve.

In fact it's rather fun and the monkeys seem to like doing it. Man is making good humane use of animals like they use water buffaloes to plough rice-fields, the dogs to fetch the slippers or newspapers, to lead blind people around, to guard the house. No cruelty in that but fun for the animals and utility for the humans. The English hypothetically condemn us for humanely teaching monkeys to be a useful part of society but delight in chasing down hares, peasants, deer and foxes galloping the horses after them (in itself cruel, no?) and shooting them to death for sport. Who is being cruel to animals?

Not Thai for having macaques to help plucking coconuts certainly!

But... if you stare at things long enough, they are bound to change somehow over time... which you can then announce to the world as a newly developed product. However, I'm not sure 20 minutes is going to do the trick. Try 20 months. Or years.

This new variety has a unique stem, at the exact moment of required ripeness the stem will break and release itself from the tree and fall to the ground to be picked up.

No need for monkeys to climb trees, however to to keep them suitably employed they will be re-trained to load pick-up trucks!

Just like all the workers in North Korea. They are all smiling in the propaganda videos, so we must assume that they love their jobs and life.

If the monkeys really loved picking coconuts, why do you need to put a chain and a rope around it's neck to pull it down.

0.16 hectare. Why not say Rai for goodness sake?

 

How long to maturity? What is the other 10% of labour?

 

Is the lady saying: this looks like a coconut....

From the pic' I'm visioning the possibility that she could be saying " Alas poor coconut I knew it well " with the dude on the left wearing an expression that he expects it to answer back .. but they are merely observations on my part and are in no way uttered to instill mirth in fellow contributors .. equally they are not inflammable in any way so as not to offend those who might have been at the back of the queue for the sense of humour handouts .. t'is nothing but a straight bat safety shot again ..
