"Inside" info on Extension of Amnesty

I thought I share some possible good news to give us some hope.

A neighbor of ours says that he has a friend who works at the immigration office here in Bangkok and he said that there's an "80% chance that amnesty to be extended to September"

Keeping my fingers crossed!

  • I think there is about a 100% chance of it. They would of already said it would not be extended by now. No cabinet approval of no amnesty is needed. Cabinet meeting tomorrow may give us an answer

    So that's a 40% chance?

  • It is not exactly a deadline. Read the fine print at the bottom.

I would hope its true, but if not im going on a jet plane.

I heard the same thing, but it was 82%. Not sure who to believe now.

I think we will get one of these 2 scenarios:

1. They will not extend it and simply not say anything. After all, they did give us a deadline and it's July 31. Why do they need to give another one?

2. They do extend it.

A post on facebook stated the same, the poster said his wife told him the same thing after she rang immigration about his multiple entry visa expiring.

All hear say at this point, but it does look promising for people who need it.

Immigration ppl think all kinds of stuff and are clueless themselves.

Hardly inside info and there have been plenty of others who have posted here who have asked their local I/Os and they said they doubt it will be extended

Most local I/OS will have no idea what is happening until the orders come from above - if he is only 80% it means he has not heard anything concrete

Just another amnesty thread that leaves us all none the wiser

If they weren't going to extend it, they would have said so by now.  Hopefully it goes past September.

Some immigration offices might have to open 24 hrs a day if they cancel the amnesty at the end of the month.

They gave us a deadline already. July 31. Why does everyone think there will be another one coming?

Because of this thing called Covid around the world causing countries to shut down their borders.

Put it this way, how has the situation changed since last time they extended amnesty? If it hasn't, then they should continue the same decision they made last time.

Because it seems like nobody in this cabinet could organise a <deleted> up at a brewery - last minute updates and avoiding the blame are the standard, not the exception.

Unless you know something we don't - plenty of flights are cancelled, lots of borders are closed, and business people stuck in visa limbo can't get an in-out needed to continue to run their businesses in a failing economy.

Because they didn't say that it's a strict deadline, but gave people the impression that it will be extended if the situation isn't resolved.

Looking around Pattaya, there are not many foreigners...most are already doing 90 days and many that were stuck have returned home....Im not sure 1st August will be busy with or without an amnesty..

If governments are going to strap on their chastity belts every time there is a 'spike', however minor, in Covid infections, then we could be in this situation for 10 years, unless by chance they hit on a successful vaccine somewhere.

It will be interesting to see when the Thai government issues the 'get lost' order to foreigners without visas.

I think most of us were surprised when they gave everybody by 3 months.

We only have experience with immigration, who would probably not be so generous, but the amnesty is done by the cabinet.

Would be funny if next week we would read "Amnesty extended until 31st July 2021" instead of the "get lost" order which is anticipated by many people here.

Think your point is a good one. Clearly your having a joke about the dates. However very little has changed. An extension to amnesty seems only solution.

The option of amnesty ends and you need to apply for 30 extensions as previously done would cause chaos. The option of hard (Brit) exit unthinkable.

I guess its powerbroking all the way: put out some scary rumours, then the agents (and their contacts) get a share, also those who wants to expel everyone feel pandered too. Then come up with something that is not called a further amnesty last minute, to keep the real economy afloat (together with the families that depend on that...)

A very good solution would be to give 1 month extension only for anyone, but for a payment of 1900 and applying in person.

That way there would be a tally of people still here, some income, and a clear demarcation that "nothing is for free any longer"!

I think that's a chance. Thing is they would need announce that asap and make clear that the 30 day would commence Aug 1.

You could not have everyone leaving it to last minute if the 30 was to start from application.

Well, that could be done with a 14 day period in which to do the extension...

Hopefully some workable solution will come on the table, there must be SOME higher up immigration officers that want to avoid a full on stampede!

for those who is left in thailand, they are not tourist anymore,  i don't think they mind paying a 1900 a month to keep the extension going until thing get back to normal
