Nine people in Rayong have tested negative for Covid-19 after coming into close contact with an infected Egyptian soldier who visited the province last week.

Two hotel managers, one employee, four housemaids, and two drivers were tested and cleared of infection, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported on Wednesday (July 15).

Rayong authorities have urged anyone who visited the Laem Thong shopping mall on the same day as the infected Egyptian – July 10 – to visit the city’s Covid-19 testing facility for a free test today or tomorrow from 10am-3pm.

Good, but positive results often don't show until 10-12 days after contact.

Where did you get this number?

Considering mean incubation time is 5 days and that PCR tests are sensitive enough to even detect before the onset of symptoms, 10 to 12 days before testing positive is actually a rare occurrence.

This is the reason why Taiwan is now offering a shorter 7-day quarantine option with a test after 5 days, because the very large majority of infected people will test positive within that timeframe.

Maybe, but the main point of law ling's post still applies - read it as 'Good, but positive results often don't show until a mean time of 5 days after contact'.

Seems these potentially exposed contacts were tested on or around Monday 13 July (perhaps eary Tuesday 14) and the mall visit was on 10 July/first contact with a driver or hotel person late on 9 July. They surely have to be tested again in the next few days before Thais/we can take any comfort. Sloppy journalism to have suggested an already hopeful outcome.

So ... what's the incubation period again?

There are some tests that show antibodies, the cheaper tests that look like pregnancy test. These are likely what Lao authorities used on labourers returning from Thailand and found 20% of them positive as per another article. It would support theory that many Thais already got infected late last year or early in this year and are thus mostly immune to the old Wuhan virus, but might not be so to the Bergamo strain that is found in most patients now.
