BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand opened its twice-postponed annual auto show to the public on Wednesday in the country's first large-scale event since coronavirus restrictions eased, with nearly all attendees wearing masks and face shields.

Thailand is a major regional car production hub and its previous motor shows booked over a million people in attendance.

Thermal scans were at the entrance to the 41st Bangkok International Motor Show and temperatures were measured as people visited booths, where waiting spots were prepared to ensure physical distancing.

Guests were also required to check-in and out with their cellphones to allow for contact tracing.

"I don't come to the event every year, but I think for the first day of the event amid a pandemic, people are in quite large numbers," said Suriya Thanakorn, 50, who was on the lookout for a new car.

Motor shows around the world have been forced to cancel or delay due to the pandemic.

But Thailand has pressed ahead having gone nearly seven weeks without local transmission of the virus, which has infected just over 3,000 people, most of which have recovered.

Chief organiser Prachin Eamlumnow said eyes will be on how Thailand handles one of the first big global shows since the pandemic started.

"No country can arrange an event on this scale, so the other event organizers will be watching," he said. "We have succeeded in controlling COVID-19."

There are 25 car brands including Nissan and BMW and 22 motorcycle manufacturers on show at booths with specific entry and exit points to prevent crowding.

Ramesh Narasimhan, president of Nissan Thailand, said the stringent measures should be maintained to ensure good attendance throughout the 12-day event.

"It's really important for us to keep it for the entire show, but the first signs are very, very positive, so I'm pretty excited about that," he said.

Interesting - will there be cars on display (with the associated sales personnel) that were manufactured in Rayong???

SHIJIAZHUANG (Xinhua) — China’s leading sport utility vehicles (SUV) and pickup maker Great Wall Motors on Monday said it will purchase General Motors’ Rayong car production facility in Thailand.

According to a binding agreement inked by the two companies, the transaction and handover, which include a car plant and a power assembly plant in Rayong currently operated by the Detroit carmaker, are expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

As a regional manufacturing center, the Rayong plant has produced nearly 1.4 million cars since it went operational in 2000.

"...will there be cars on display (with the associated sales personnel) that were manufactured in Rayong?"

Do you mean GM cars or GWM cars?

Sorry, no idea GM and/or GWM vehicles.

No idea?  Huh?  You asked the question. "will there be cars on display (with the associated sales personnel) that were manufactured in Rayong???", how come you have no idea about what it meant?

I do know what I meant - I asked a reasonable question about what cars were manufactured in Rayong as I had no idea which ones were, not no idea what I meant!! For information I have since researched the internet and found this, answering my question (BMW are certainly based in Rayong):-

Brands participating at 2020 Bangkok Motor Show According to the organizer, several car and motorcycle brands have confirmed their participation in the event including Ford, Suzuki, BMW, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Maserati, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Audi, Lexus, Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo, Kia, Lamborghini, Royal Enfield, Bajaj, KTM and many more. There will also be a virtual motor show, an online event, to give the new car buyers an additional avenue to stay updated about new launches.

there are some on here who are just argumentatists Bill I know what you are referring to .. The show itself may be an insufferable experience with masks , shields and do not touch signs everywhere .. and with few real ground breaking vehicles released this year it may be one to miss this time around ..

Mercedes absent this year

did they issue a statement why ?

it was pretty busy yesterday considering ..

but space to actually see all the cars

biggest queues were double lined for Toyota, would have thought best to go to local dealer as they were giving sweet FA away for a Motor Show Purchase

Not exactly!  In that post you specifically referenced GM and GWM, I was asking you which manufacturer you meant...

"SHIJIAZHUANG (Xinhua) — China’s leading sport utility vehicles (SUV) and pickup maker Great Wall Motors on Monday said it will purchase General Motors’ Rayong car production facility in Thailand.

That's why I asked you to clarify and that's why your response that you had "no idea" was so odd.
