From left: Kobsak Pootrakool, Uttama Savanayana, Sontirat Sontijirawong and Suvit Maesincee at Government House on Thursday.

Key Cabinet members tendered their resignations on Thursday at Government House.

Handing in their papers were Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana, Energy Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Suvit Maesincee and Kobsak Pootrakool, deputy secretary-general to the PM for political affairs.

Except Somkid, all of them went personally to Government House to submit their own letters and handed over Somkid's resignation.

Sontirat, Suwit and Uttama had earlier resigned from the Phalang Pracharat Party's executive posts.

Uttama said that it was the right time to step down, insisting that they were not under pressure to resign.

Sontirat said he has no plan to set up a new political party.

BANGKOK (NNT) - The resignations of the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Somkid Jatusripitak, and four ministers in his economic team have taken effect, with the five holding a press conference claiming their decision was in the best interests of the country and that they were not pressured to step down.

The Finance Minister, Uttama Savanayana, accompanied by the Energy Minister, Sontirat Sontijirawong; the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister, Suvit Maesince, and the Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, Dr. Kobsak Pootrakool, submitted their resignation letters to Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, through his Secretary, Disathat Hotrakit. Their resignations took effect immediately.

Dr. Somkid tasked Dr. Kobsak with submitting the letters, remarking that the decision was timely and in the country’s interests, elaborating that it should reduce political pressure on the Prime Minister and allow greater clarity in terms of a cabinet reshuffle. He assured the public that the move was not due to any pressure and that the parting was amicable. Mr. Uttama added that future cooperation with the government was not out of the question if it is for the greater good of the nation.

555 and another 555 ... that is the most absurd statement I have ever heard coming from the lips of a Thai politicians ... since when have they done anything for the "good of the nation" as opposed to lining their own pockets?

I read they were the most qualified in the country for this job.

So how can their resignation be in the best interests of the country?

was there a buy three get one free promotion?

Basically if the man at the top ignores your advice long enough it’s time to fold the tent. These men actually know their jobs and even in bad times did do what they saw as the needed things. But clearly their jobs are impossible at this point. So stop shooting a dead horse, it wastes bullets.

The economy is going down the pan, not just tourism as it only generates 12% [cough] of the GDP

These guys have tried to no avail to steer the manufacturing, import/export side of things and have been banging their heads against a brick wall of ignorance in how to run an economy.

They have given up, handed in their resignations and said to the master... "It's all yours good luck"

The top 5 Billionaire families have installed their own Economic team to replace them. Was news a couple of weeks back.

Then why all the media hype, falling on their swords or putting one each into the PM, methinks the latter as resignations on good terms usually take effect when a suitable replacement can be found, on other words, not effective immediately, so pull the other one mate, that said more should do as these guys have done to show what a balls up the PM and his cronies are, but we all know that oi.

More generals in the government is perhaps the best decision for the country. They have so much knowledge of everything as you can see at the PM ????

Somkid and four key members take to the life-boats as the Titanic goes bow-down and stern-up and musicians take to the slanting deck to play Chart Thai as the ship of state slowly sinks beneath the icy waves.

Quite possible that a political move is underway, as these guys were the better of the bunch. Somkid worked in the Taksin government and I was surprised he was asked to handle finance in the current government. So it made me think that they had nobody else that knew what to do. So a move may be on the horizon. Interesting, watch this space.
