WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump, in a shift in rhetoric on facial coverings, encouraged Americans on Tuesday to wear a mask if they cannot maintain social distance from people around them in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

In his first briefing focused on the pandemic in months, Trump told reporters at the White House that the virus will probably get worse before it gets better.

Trump has been reluctant to wear a mask himself in public. He wore one for the first time in public during a recent visit to a military hospital but has otherwise eschewed putting one on in front of the press.

As cases rises in states around the country, including in politically important states such as Florida, Texas and Arizona, Trump is shifting his tone to try to get the number of cases under control.

“We're asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask, get a mask. Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact, they'll have an effect and we need everything we can get,” he said.

Trump said he was getting used to masks and would wear one himself in groups or when on an elevator.

"I will use it, gladly," he said. "Anything that potentially can help ... is a good thing."

The president also urged young Americans to avoid crowded bars where the virus could spread.

They didn’t have an orange mask with tiny little hands drawn on it? Anyway, good that you backpeddled, Mr. Covid.

Trump supporters must be confused out of their minds over the Dear Leader's constant flip-flopping.  "Don't wear a mask."  "Wear if you want."  "Need to wear."  Maybe Trump will decide to take down confederate statues next.  If he thinks it would help him get reelected, Trump will say anything.

You want to know all about Social distancing .................Just lend a Thai some money.

Does he not remember the hundred or so times he derided the use of masks, and made fun of people who wore masks.

The (real) new daily case (67,000, up from 63,000 the day before) and death numbers (uptick from 545 to 1,115 in one day) are probably a bit alarming to the wh.

A post deflecting onto entirely different things, before trolling about the use of masks has been removed.

Thanks Mr Trump. I would never have realised.

Where would we be without you?

...and if anyone mentions his imbecellic flip- flopping to him, he will say, he always encouraged people to wear masks!

Even before the virus, because he saw it coming before everybody else did!

More flips than in an IHOP kitchen. Someone must have finally read him the riot act. Likely Mitch, who is about to lose a mess of his  colleagues and conceivably  his own seat. But obviously too little, way too late. A complete shutdown of the present hotspots won't get them under control for a couple months. Early balloting starts in 6 weeks. A poll today had him at a 36% approval rating. Dead man walking.

Trump again flip flops. I wonder how many lives were lost because of his previous stance. Too bad he wont be held responsible.

You can still laugh about him?

I guess he realized that he looks better with mask - or at least a little less stupid.

As Dana Bash reported that just after Trump made that mask announcement, he walk out to greet his staffs without a mask. LOL. I will wager that he will not wear a mask when out for his official duties.

What has happened to all expats from America who live in Thailand? They always contribute to forum discussions about Trump and his "alleged" policies and the "Left" etc. Why haven't we seen their thoughts on "flip-flopping" by their illustrious leader?

What about a class action from the families of the 140,000+ Americans who have perished because of the Administration's lack of action in the first place?

You know what's coming next - "No, I never advocated not wearing a mask. In fact, it was I who convinced Dr. Fauci to change his mind on masks, so I was way ahead of the curve on that. Go ask him, he'll tell you. Dr. Birx has said she's learned more from me about Virology than Tony."

Then you'll observe him the next day standing in close proximity to a group of people without one.

Trump says to wear a mask, then scurries back to his bunker.

"all expats from America" I am expat from America, and I consider Trump and Trumpism the worst thing that ever happened to USA in my lifetime, and it was self inflicted. There are not words to describe how low I think he and his enablers are. He has no more policies than a flatworm, other than "me first and screw everyone else". He is so damaging that I wonder if USA as a functioning (somewhat) democracy can wait until next January.

It has finally dawned on him that he was killing his own voter base, you know the ones who blindly believe everything coming out of his mouth..., therefore the flip-flop.

I have to admit I learned a lot about Americans after this Trumpism became the reality it is. Sad I never thought people like those that were enabling a person like him could become a reality. Often I would swear out loud. "I hope he does win so I can witness the outcome I knew would become reality. " I surely was shocked this could be what it has turned into. I hope that this hard earned lesson from those who decided not to vote now will  end up as the true Americans come November.

If you want a true representation of the public it should be compulsory to vote.

If you want to represent interest groups then its voluntary voting.

They probably LEFT this discussion, because they know they cant spin it to make Trump his comments RIGHT.
