California surpasses New York as worst-hit state in coronavirus cases

(Reuters) - California on Wednesday overtook New York, the original epicenter of the nation's outbreak, as the worst-hit state for cases of COVID-19, according to a Reuters tally of county data.

Total cases in the most populous U.S. state climbed above 414,000 with just a handful of California counties reporting 4,700 new cases so far on Wednesday.

New York has recorded by far the most deaths of any U.S. state at over 32,000 with California in fourth place with nearly 8,000 deaths.

If California were a country, it would rank fifth in the world for total COVID-19 cases behind only the United States, Brazil, India and Russia. New York currently has over 412,800 total cases and is adding on average 700 new cases a day in July. In California there is an average of 8,300 new cases a day.

The rapid increase of cases has made it difficult to trace the pathogen's path through the community through contact tracing, a process of interviewing people who test positive for the virus to find out how they were exposed, and whom they in turn might have exposed, California Secretary of Health and Human Services Mark Ghaly said on Tuesday.

"No one anticipated building a program to contact trace the number of cases we’re seeing here," Dr. Ghaly said at a news conference, referring to Los Angeles and other counties struggling to trace cases of the disease.

The nation's top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said on CNN Tuesday the main issue with testing is that results often do not come back for days, making it too late to do a proper job of contact tracing.

Since its crush of cases earlier this year, New York state has gotten the virus under control, reporting the fewest hospitalizations in four months on Monday and only two deaths on Tuesday.

About 142,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 - nearly a quarter of the global total.

Safe to say NY had way more cases than were confirmed, easily noted by their case fatality rate.

Also safe to say that the virus has already ripped through the community in NY as well, so no wonder their cases are so low now. It’s no victory.

No where in the world has. Far from it.

data suggest regions that took a hit early on are now close to herd immunity

That link does not take you to anyone at CNN claiming protests won’t spread COVID-19 as the poster I quoted stated.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/24/us/coronavirus-cases-protests-black-lives-matter-trnd/index.html

Black Lives Matter protests have not led to a spike in coronavirus cases, research says

a bit odd that entire countries need to shut down economy,

stop working, stop going out drinking or eating,

go to the beach, and survey the entire population with drones so none

put the quarantine at risk,

but its fine to gather in the thousands and throw bricks on others property

So that is a report on research saying the entirely legitimate BLM protests did not lead to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

That is a report on facts, not CNN making claims.

Still, good to know the peaceful, sensible and responsible actions of the BLM protestors helped prevent a spike in COVID-19 cases.

data indicate it did spike after the protest though, at 3 minute

Yet the research and facts says different.

Either way it is false to state CNN is making claims, when all it is doing is accurately reporting the facts and the news.

As to herd immunity, nothing so far indicates it is a possible solution or will even happen.

Vaccine is the way forward and until then lets practice social distancing and wear masks.

As they say in the purge movie franchise “stay safe”

more specifically, cnn are reporting the narrative that the rally didnt cause a spike,

its not fact, its a narrative, the graph in the video from 3 to 3.15 contradict the narrative

With thanks to the total stupidity of the US government, inclusive the local, and the behaviour of the US people. With 143.000 deaths per 330 mln inhabitants, still far behind the UK with 44.000 casulaties for 67,5 million inhabitants. So, keep beachers, bars, pubs, restaurants open, social distancing of one foot is enough and facemasks... CHINESE... boycot them...

I’ve watched your YouTube vid and it has only reinforced my belief that it is promoting a narrative that is rooted in theories that are not based on facts, honest use of evidence or science. .

they are rooted in data, as they correspond with the graphs,

the cnn and the narrative they reported on, otoh is in contradiction with the data graphs,

in that video.

for example the narrative that regions that was hit hard early on are reaching herd immunity

corresponds with the rate of new cases that has dropped off over 80%,

while the narratives that the rally didnt increase covid cases in houston

and that masks make or lockdown a significant difference contradict documented cases

as displaced in the graphs

Apparently, according to CNN, it's impossible to get COVID while rioting. The saliva and spit from screaming for hours on end is completely harmless

Most of the demonstrators have enough sense to wear masks even including the few who riot. Trump supporters when they demonstrate, not so much.

Yeah, right.

I stand by my previous post.
