Dear All,

I know the subject of what we are allowed to do and what we are not has been covered many times and I am sorry if this is going to bore you.

What I need to know is exactly what constitutes a requirement for the necessity to obtain a 'work permit'.  Let me give you a bit of background first.  I am married to a Thai and have been for quite a number of years.  I have a 'marriage' extension to my visa until next year so have no visa problems [I think!].  My wife and I have a nice house [in my wife's name] and a quite large landscaped garden.

Both my wife and I do the gardens together and try and keep them nice.  A couple of times in the last few weeks I have noticed someone outside the property watching me mow the lawns.  It is the same person every time.  This week he actually got off his moped and was watching me through the fencing from the road.

My real question is - does doing jobs and maintenance on the property where you live [and is your registered address with Immigration] constitute 'working'?  I have heard and read so many different things that I would like to find the definitive answer if possible.

Thank you for reading this and hopefully one of you can set my mind at rest.

You can do about anything on your property or home without a work permit.

Some Things such of building an addition to your  home would be a little more than what is allowed.

You cannot get a work permit unless your register a company or partnership with your wife with a registered capital of 1 million baht and have at least 2 Thai employees.

Thank you Ubonjoe.  I don't want or need any sort of work permit as I am a 70 year old retired pensioner.  I just wondered if the man watching me was sort of 'collecting evidence' to complain about me working.  All I want to do is small maintain jobs around the house and keep the gardens in good condition and nice to look at.

You have nothing to worry about. Perhaps somebody just curious about what you are doing.

Maybe just admiring the landscaping perhaps.

It certainly wouldn't hurt for you or your wife to engage him in conversation. He really could be admiring the garden or possibly thinking of offering his assistance (for a fee of course) with the mowing and maintenance.

But as Joe notes, regular gardening and stuff on your own home doesn't constitute "work", but don't cut the neighbour's grass!

We pay a man to cut the grass every other week. It's really just too hot for me, I provide the mower / trimmer and fuel then sit in the shade and watch ????

Don't fret, I expect he wants to ask if he can help... it may surprise him that an apparently well to do foreigner is prepared to do this type of work himself. I spent money on gardening paraphernalia and tried to do it myself but found it utterly exhausting in the heat and too often ended up drinking beer... now a guy comes round!

My gardener comes with his own gear, I sit inside the house behind tinted glass drinking a cold beer in the cool air con whilst they slog it out manicuring the gardens and picking my dogs presents.

He is just interested to watch a farang doing these things.

When I painted our front fence & gate  in the village I had a constant audience for 3 days

Maybe the man hasn't seen a lawn mover before. ????
