Cambodia to ban flights from Malaysia and Indonesia from August 1 to curb COVID-19 spike

Alarmed over the number of Covid-positive passengers   coming in via Malaysia and Indonesia, the government is temporarily suspending flights from both countries from August 1 until their infection rates  decline. “According to Mr Hun Sen’s statement, the prime minister has agreed to temporarily suspend flights from Indonesia and Malaysia after observing the high transmission rates from passengers travelling from both countries,” a Ministry of Health statement said.

Almost all of those who tested positive were Cambodian citizens returning from Russia and the Middle East via transit flights through Malaysia. They had been stranded in various middle east countries and Russia for a lengthy period of time. It said: “Between June 20th and July 25th, the Ministry noted a significant increase in imported cases of COVID-19, most of whom took flights from Malaysia and Indonesia.”

The statement also said the move was in light of the upcoming holidays in August, which requires extra measures to be taken to prevent potential virus transmission. Mr Hun Sen confirmed the move yesterday via his official Facebook page, stating the measures were necessary to prevent the spread of the virus in Cambodia.

And unfortunately any border openings in any country will bring in Covid 19 infectious people and remain the pattern on a global basis while the virus is still prevalent.  Luckily, these Asian countries are experiencing low volume infection rates and will be best placed to control outbreaks by quarantining, test and tracing and 'temporary' border closures.

I surmise that international commuter air travel and global tourism will become declining industries for several more years yet. Which is an economic nightmare for Thailand. It amazes me that the baht is still relatively strong - probably because the affluent countries are also economically suffering.

INTERESTING. the way i understand it, those cambodians who come back via

russia and middle east , are not infected are those who come via malasia and indonesia.

this strengthens a theory that middle east like parts of se asia and china

are immune to the corona virus, because large portions of the population

were exposed to the virus in earlier outbreaks of the SARS in asia and MERS in middle east.

Exposure to one virus does not convey resistance to a different one.

It is the same as making love to one woman doesn't mean you have made love to all women.

Having had SARS or MERS won't make a person any more resistant to COVID-19 than anyone else.

Please note in an earlier repatriation (from Khmer Times July 12 2020):-

According to the release, the new cases were found on 15 Cambodian men, aged between 21 to 33 and had arrived in Cambodia on July 10 from Saudi Arabia via Malaysia. They were all admitted to Chak Angre Health Centre in Phnom Penh.
