Bangkok restaurant refusal to serve foreigners goes viral – VIDEO

By The Thaiger

gr.PNG

The Fullmoon Terrace and Bar, in Lat Phrao in the north east suburbs of Bangkok, is refusing to serve foreigners. It’s not a good look, especially when there have been no locally-transmitted cases of Covid-19 for over 2 months and the man was wearing a mask and being quite pleasant about the whole matter. The Thaiger wouldn’t have been as polite.

Yan Marchal posted his video with full commentary about his visit to the restaurant. 2 staff came to him, almost as soon as he sat down, and said they were unable to serve foreigners. There was no argument, beyond asking to speak to the manager but Yan was informed the manager was not available.

The video, which has been a popular post of The Thaiger’s Facebook page today, has had mostly negative comments about the restaurant’s refusal to serve foreigners. There has also been quite a few other cases, some of them posted in the comments section, where more examples have exposed a small rise in cases of commercial xenophobia.

Thailand has had no locally transmitted cases of Covid-19 for more than 2 months. The refusal of service to foreigners smacks of unnecessary discrimination, mostly hurting their own businesses at a time many other restaurants are glad for any customers at all, especially in the outer suburbs of Bangkok. The Fullmoon Terrace and Bar was almost empty at the time.

There are no laws within the Kingdom of Thailand which specifically outlaws racial discrimination inclusive of racist cliches and the restaurant has not broken the law.

The Thaiger has sent a message to the management of the Fullmoon Terrace and Bar asking for some more details and rationale about their policy. There has been no reply at this stage. The video has already been widely shared around Facebook.

It's clearly xenophobia stop making excuses for it and as the country that was the first place outside China to get covid it's pretty pathetic to hear you drone on about how it's the white mans fault

  • That concept is way too complicated.   Farang no good. Farang refuse mask. Now that's simple enough for Yinn. If she's not sure she can ask Anutin. Him good. Him rich man. Thai. good.

  • What that kind is nothing to do whit Thailand? Farang's in Thailand do more than thai about social distancing and use mask! And like already said how can be infected farang in Thailand if already

Could be that it is a Student bar and they had problems with retired Westerners going to the bar just to look at the students and drink one beer all night long ?

One of a few restaurants in Thailand that doesn´t need more customers when most restaurants suffer because they have not enough customers.

When people want to come in the restaurant and they don't wear a mask that is not a good sign. And that is easy to spot.

How do they manage to eat and drink whilst wearing a mask ?

This is in back area of a supermarket shopping center and not near any schools or near any Westerners or main road.

Presumably you'd be fine with white owned restaurants in farangland having a "no blacks" policy?

Plenty of other places they can go, right?

I'm sure you'd be happy to tell these blacks to just go somewhere else and stop complaining. Remind them that hundreds of places still let the blacks in, it's not that difficult for them.

Is what you write reality or just theory?

There will always be places where "others" are not welcome. Maybe i.e. a bouncer won't let them in. Or the "others" will soon realize that they are unwelcome inside.

We won't be able to eliminate that kind of behavior.

But we all have lots of choices. We go to the places which we like and avoid the places which we don't like.

Let's assume there is a restaurant which does not like me as their guest. And then let's assume they are forced to let me in. Would I would want to go to such a place? Sure not!

This is why I wrote: "When people want to come in the restaurant". That's is before they take a seat and before they order and before they drink and eat.

Really ??????  being a little pedantic no?

The mask comes off and goes in the bin while sitting at the table & is replaced by a fresh mask before leaving and walking past other tables.

Isn't Yan Marchal the French guy who criticized the Thai government with a song a while back?

He's lucky the government hasn't sent him back yet.

I've been 4 or 5 times and yes there are plenty of students there on the weekend, but I've never seen any other white people there before. This is more of a locals hangout and I only found out about it through a Thai friend.

It's actually a really good bar complex with a lake/pond in the middle, this no foreigners rule must have been introduced after I left Thailand, I departed 25th March.

It's things like this that will put people off coming to Thailand and that is if foreigners are ever let back in again.

It's at the end of Ratchada soi 32, small shopping arcade and at the back is the bar complex. There is a uni nearby.

If its bouncers not letting people in because they are in a ‘group of guys’ or not meeting the dress code etc thats ok, if its based on race or nationality that is clearly outrageous and wrong.

The same can be said for restaurants, bars and any other establishment open to the public - if someone is not allowed in because they are drunk, misbehaving, being antisocial, miss behaved last time they were there etc etc that is of course fine - but if entry is refused based on race or nationality, again, that is clearly outrageous and wrong.

IF any restaurants, bar or any other establishment open to the public was hesitant to let me in at all for any reason which left distaste, I would never want to go there anyway.

Thus, as your wrote OneMoreFarang, would I want to go to such a place? No !!!

This is one place which I never will go to, and I hope we all boycott.

I like the fact that these sorts of places are named an shamed - that way I don’t waste my time accidentally going there and finding myself in the situation of getting rejected based on race and nationality.

I like to see the statistic of how many people do that?

It seems all the people who I know use one mask for the time they are away from home. They don't change it one or several times per day. But maybe I just don't know the right kind of people.

Thailand don't welcome foreigners but foreigners still come in droves. Ironic, isn't it?

You are right...  it is for reasons such as this that the ‘Anti-mask’ debate has been raging.

We [the general] population have not been adequately educated to the most basic of standards about mask wear such that our poor ‘mask etiquette’ makes wearing a mask less effective than it could be.

Though, thats a fairly moot point in a country with no local transmission for over 50 days and thus no asymptomatic people (if we believe that) which is a debate for another thread, of course !!!!
