Fewer people used the rail-transport system during the latest long weekend compared to the previous long weekend of July 3-7, the Department of Rail Transport said on Wednesday (July 29).

Sorapong Paitoonpong, the department’s director general, said 3.36 million people used rail transport, including the BTS, between July 24 and 28, compared to 3.52 million during the July 3 to 7 long-weekend.

On Tuesday, 527,093 people used the railway compared to 802,186 passengers on July 7. Of the total passengers on Tuesday, 67,801 took normal trains, or 16.18 per cent more compared to July 7, while the remainder took electric trains.

However, passengers using the Skytrain and metro dropped by 38.27 per cent compared to the numbers on July 7.

Not at surprise, considering the speed trains are travelling here.

True, over 100 years ago in the UK, passenger trains were traveling faster than today's Thai trains on the SRT.

One day, in the distant future, there will be HSTs. One day!

Unless the HST railway track is elevated, there'll still be picup trucks stuck on the crossings every here and there. But at least, it could be as fast as the trains was in UK 80 years ago?

Main problem with the trains are infrequent services and lack of connections. It is theoretically possible for me to travel from Udon Thani to Hua Hin, but only once a day, have to change trains and it takes nearly 14 hours......
