Sweden failed by allowing this into their old folks homes, as did New York, Italy etc.  Take out old folks homes deaths, and stats like these from the Minnesota department of health show that if you are not in a long term care facility, you have a very very low chance of dying from this.

IIRC, there was a grand total of 71 people in Sweden below 50 years of age that dyed from covid.

Absolute insanity.    I always respected NZ. To me this would be like calling for world war 3 because someone stubbed their left pinky toe.

Spineless politicians prepared to punish the people mercilessly while they and the minions who prepare the paperwork, and the experts who create the fear all get paid fully. I like the Swedish approach except they failed to take care of the aged care. Personally at the end of this I am not going to suffer fools gladly. Most people know how to absorb a message, wash hands, distance themselves, stay home if they're sick, get tested etc. That is what Sweden did, they trusted people. In Australia and NZ everybody has to be treated like the dumbest bogan, the lowest common denominator theory. I dont wish the illness on anybody but if people pick it up out of stupidity Darwin's law applies. Today I heard the Victorian MO say that they had to get the R number down to .6 before reducing restrictions. Earlier on in the pandemic, 1 was sufficient. Also he was boasting about the low flu numbers this year and what a fantastic result that was. Unbelievable.

many more will follow NZ ,those who never had many cases ..

Coronavirus: Cases surge as France goes 'wrong way'

New coronavirus infections have nearly doubled in France in recent weeks as Prime Minister Jean Castex warned that the country had been going "the wrong way" for two weeks.

The health ministry reported 1,397 new infections of Covid-19 since Monday. Fourteen people have died.

A ban on meetings of more than 5,000 people has been extended to 30 October.

Mr Castex also asked local authorities to further extend the requirement to wear face masks in public.

"The epidemiological situation, which we are following very closely, is deteriorating: 2,000 new cases per day compared to 1,000 three weeks ago," Mr Castex said at a press conference in Montpellier.

"About 25 new clusters are identified every day compared to five three weeks ago," he added.

It is already compulsory to wear face coverings nationwide on public transport and in indoor spaces including shops and government offices.

Local authorities have the ability to impose mask-wearing and some have introduced it in outdoor spaces, including Paris tourist hot spots and the banks of the river Seine.

More than 30,000 people have already died from the disease in France, which experienced a significant wave of cases in March and April.

Beyond me why people keep bringing this up, when the people involved in Sweden admit they failed.

It's easy to find people that support any position. I'm sure many think they got it right.

We don't take the exceptions as the rule. Perhaps he had underlying health problems that you don't mention.

If it affected young people seriously many more would be dead now.

On here, yes; people involved, no.

Auckland locked down for another 12 days but the general populace ignoring the incompetent government.

People driving, enjoying the sun at beaches etc.

The National opposition party was due to launch their election campaign this weekend in Auckland so Jacinda imposed the shutdown, typical socialist tactic. learnt from her Beijing mates?

With elections postponed, there goes that reasoning out of the window.

He had no underlying issues. The young pass it on to the vulnerable. Its been proven over and over the young dont care, they cant be trusted.

Yes if you live in a country where many children are affected by health issues such as "malnutrition and anaemia" and 1 in 5 between ages and 13 and 15 smoke cigarettes you would expect more covid deaths.  The linked also notes where children haven't died in SE Asia from covid.  All that being said I would also note the word "suspected."

Actually it appears the facts on the NZ election delay are that Jacinda was told on Sunday by Winston Peters to delay the election or he would withdraw his support immediately (Jacinda only got 37% of the vote last election and had to form a coalition with Peters to govern) That meant her coalition had disintegrated unless she agreed.

Even the Greens were not informed until this morning as were National and Act.

She had no choice.

Doesn't matter, the reasoning 'she announced the lockdown to prevent the opposition to start their campaign' is out of the window.

Have they done an autopsy?

Which is why we need to isolate the vulnerable, not the entire population.

From the Age Melbournes broadsheet newspaper "Premier Daniel Andrews said the man was not a resident of a disability facility but declined to reveal more information, saying there may still be some ambiguity as to whether coronavirus had caused the man's death."

Why?

The planned campaign start was made more difficult due to lockdown. So with the same timeline the planned campaign start will be a month away, so that is no reason to complain about the lockdown.

Seems very obvious to me.

NZ Labour had opened their campaign on the weekend with all the TV and media coverage that that entails for the Labour Party launch.

Ardern then announced level 3 lockdown only for Auckland where National and Act were launching the following weekend. Clearly the launches could not go ahead and the parties would not get any of the huge publicity that Labour had already had.

Then Ardern conscripted TV and Radio everyday for a 1/2 hour media conference with her at the forefront and of course repeated on the 6pm and 10.30pm news.

She then announced she saw no reason to alter the date of the election.

Ardern only altered the date when Winston Peters said he would dissolve his coalition with Labour and that would force Labour to step down as govt as they would then not have the numbers.

Aredern's campaign was already started that is why it was so nefarious

And that argument is gone with the postponement.
