An army spokesman patted the country's military on the back for a job well done following the annual recruitment drive from July 23rd to August 9th.

In addition to record numbers all the Covid-19 measures were well followed causing no problems, said Sirijan Ngathong.

New recruits will report to their bases between September 1st and 3rd.

It was a better year than last with 41,406 volunteers.

Changes in the regulations resulted in a 44.72% increase from last year.

Those who did not show up according to summonses will be traced and asked to explain themselves.

Prosecutions could follow.

  • I would have though the  WuFlu lockdown and resulting economic disaster has had a huge impact at least enrolling  with the men in green will provide shelter and food during the  military "trainin

  • Just how big is a general's garden, for them all to cut the grass - their main occupation surely? For 1,600 generals that's 25 'volunteers' per general's garden.

  • Correct. No jobs out there. No prospects, but the army will supply free board, lodging and training. Not surprising really.

All they have to say is that they suspected they had Covid-19, and did not want to jeopardise the impeccable "Thailand is free of Covid" reputation, therefore knocking it off top spot of:

Thailand ranked world's safest tourist destination amid Covid-19

I believe that if they "volunteer"  instead of  picking the wrong colour ticket  they have to serve less time.

shocking Not, for a military junta government it's (or was) expected, everybody/everyone wants a piece of the cake regardless the size of the piece and/or the rank, there's always a freebee somewhere

On the same level as another national secret: How much wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker could peck wood?

I think you may be wrong, I can understand how lots of guys would volunteer, just for the food and lodgings, in the current economic climate

7'500 a month intially which can then rise (marginally) depending on if they learn a specialism - engineer, rader ops etc and then later on promotions.

Thanks - not a lot but then desperate times and all that

The term is translated from Thai. Volunteer in this case means they did not choose to deal with the "lottery" and instead asked to join. People that picked the red card are not called volunteers.

Perhaps the would do better for the ladyboys.

The British Navy had a recruiting slogan decades ago: 'Join the Navy and feel a man'.

I kid you not.

The recruits must be delighted then!

Only one houseboy per General?

Is that enough?

Yea...volunteer....get trained in weapons ready for the proletarian revolution

40.000 new slaves to wash mercedes of their slave masters, trim the garden, etc...

The Lao, Cambodian, Malaysian and Burmese soldiers are gathered along the Thai borders to invade Thailand.

40000 is not enough.

Put make up on and a dress and mince about saying ka, easy way out of this servitude
