BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Labor has refuted the claim of 8 million job losses by opposition parties at a COVID-19 forum on the pandemic’s impact on workers, stressing that the Ministry of Labor is offering help to affected persons by means of several mechanisms.

Following a forum on the impact of COVID-19 on both formal and informal workers, the Minister of Labor Suchart Chomklin thanked the opposition parties for presenting their data on the unemployment crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but made clarifications to some of the issues and claims.

The Minister of Labor elaborated on the number of workers registered with Social Security according to Articles 33, 39, and 40 said to be roughly 16.3 million, with about 714,000 (714 ,268) receiving unemployment benefit payments due to the pandemic. The Social Security Office has made about 17 billion baht (17.224bn) in payments to eligible benefit holders, and compensated some 900,000 furloughed workers employed at businesses now temporarily closed.

Addressing the claim that the government has failed to take care of all affected workers, the Minister of Labor said the government has launched several campaigns, such as the general payout campaign, and employment campaigns that are now employing some 200,000 workers from its 400,000 target.

The government has been offering 30 billion baht in soft loans, intended to help businesses maintain their operations and save jobs. These soft loans have so far been approved for 63 businesses, and helped save 8,158 jobs. In addition, the Ministry of Labor is set to encourage the employment of 5,000 more people through its campaign funded by its 2021 Fiscal Year budget.

The Ministry of Labor is also planning to set up a National Employment Center to facilitate jobseekers and provide job matching guidance to the general public. It will be advocating the development of a central online employment platform funded by the 400 billion baht Emergency Loans.

The new online service is expected to be launched this month, promulgating some 400,000 job offers, while preparations are being made to continue sending Thai workers overseas after the COVID-19 situation improves globally.

Better late than never?    This should have been done in April.   Doesn't really matter, as the domestic gross product is small.   Too few control far too much which means very little get circulated.   The Thai 1% are like a big clog in a pipe.

Time to tackle serious infrastructure projects (not just repaving roads).

suggestions

Flyways/overpasses to reduce U-Turns

Traffic lights  to reduce speeding and U-Turn accidents

Hospitals and schools (relocate schools from main thoroughfares)

Re developement   to move residential from high density traffic areas

Parking structures

active police patrols  especially to control traffic flow/speeding/competent driving habits

I know many will not agree   just my comment.

That's called Socialism - or worse Communism.

Governments should stay out of the economy entirely ! Let the market sort it out.

A contraction is necessary ! Zombies are dead - let them be dead ! Free resources to do something productive !

Exactly. The government can't save anyone. It's the people that are paying for government, not the other way around.

The government can only take money from the people and give it to someone else. There's no free lunch.

Americans will soon discover/realize that the most expensive way to pay for government is through the printing press when the dollar is destroyed.

These liars are basically saying that there's not 8 million unemployed because they are only paying unemployment to 800k. The other 7.2m unemployed are not receiving benefits so they don't exist? ????

You got it in one.

The government say the the number of unemployed matches the numbers of those paid benefits.
The government has a history of making payments almost impossible to get.

Funny how that's only become a concern as of late, as the sight of government handing cash out to regular, needy people seriously irks some, for some reason.

It certainly wasn't a concern during Reaganomics and Dubya's tax cuts, in which the printing presses couldn't spin fast enough putting dollars into the pockets of corporations, their board members, and majority shareholders.

Yeah, let's try that again. Surely it'll "trickle down" this time.

Actually, the money is mostly going to corporations and bankers this time too.

The reason the dollar has survived this far is because it's the world's reserve currency. It's about to lose that status soon I think.

Also, the reason we haven't seen inflation on consumer prices is because the inflation has been mostly in stocks and real estate. Because, again, most of the money goes to the bankers...

In another thread  8000 people turn up at a hotel to apply for 300 jobs  !!!!!

Yet I'm having trouble getting a crew to even out the ground at my yard, a simple job even a Somchai could do. I guess it's one where you can't facebook all day but actually have to work. Eventually I'll find a Burmese group to do it.
