BANGKOK(NNT) - The House Speaker has urged parliament to serve as a pillar of the nation, reminding MPs to uphold their duties and democratic values, while encouraging related persons to use parliament as a platform to help solve national crises.

House Speaker Chuan Leekpai, addressed recent protests and displays of symbolic gestures by students expressing their disapproval of the government, saying that students can use the parliament as a problem solving platform by having an MP file a motion to open a session on matters of concern.

He then spoke in regard to anticipation from all sides for parliament to become the body that solves political conflicts. Mr Chuan said discussions in the house alternate between serious and less serious matters, but everything remains under control with all the rules respected.

Earlier, MPs from the Move Forward Party, gave notice of their decision to withhold their names from a constitutional amendment filed by six opposition parties, which 37 MPs from the Move Forward Party had initially signed.

The opposition whip Sutin Klungsang, said he was informed about their withdrawal five minutes prior to the filing, adding however, that the change won’t cause any dissent between opposition parties, while the House Speaker confirmed that their withdrawal from the motion can be advised verbally, without affecting the validity of the motion.

The motion on the amendment of Article 256 of the constitution was filed yesterday and is now being reviewed. It will be included on the agenda for the House of Representative’s session after the completion of the review expected by the end of this week.

get the men in uniform out

problem is those it is aimed at have their fingers in their ears and whistling a tune

Indeed, but getting them out/affecting change through parliament (the due process) will not be possible. Unfortunately, the country will need to be taken back. It means normal, apathetic Thais hardening up and getting their hands dirty. Alternative: sit back and wait generations for change.

Parliament is the crisis.

'Pillar of the Nation'.   Don't make me laugh; the average Pillar built by Thai Builders starts cracking up fairly quickly !
