WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will posthumously pardon American social reformer and women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony who was fined in 1872 for voting illegally.

Speaking at a White House event to mark the 100th anniversary of ratification of the U.S. Constitution’s 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, Trump said: "I will be signing a full and complete pardon of Susan B. Anthony. She was never pardoned."

Trump is facing a tough fight for re-election in November and has tried in recent weeks to appeal to women voters, especially those in the suburbs.

He said on Saturday he would consider pardoning Edward Snowden, who gave a trove of secret files in 2013 to news organizations that disclosed vast domestic and international surveillance operations carried out by the National Security Agency..

On Monday, he hinted that he would pardon a "very, very important" person, but added it would not be Snowden or former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Last month, Trump used his presidential power to commute the sentence of longtime friend and adviser Roger Stone, who was convicted of lying under oath to lawmakers investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

Trump received a significant number of women's votes in 2016 and will do so again.

So what's wrong with them?

Sure I would because the motive would have been genuine trumps just pandering he could care less imo

Tug said 'good, long overdue'. I agree with that. Good action, bad motive. But that's what happens this time.

????????????.  I'm not convinced he had ever heard of her until some bright spark suggested it as a way to attract the female vote.  Perhaps she was mentioned in the history section of the college entrance exam that somebody took for him?

Perhaps Kanye told him!

Very interesting. On Friday I received an offer on a domain name I have had for years with zero interest.

I had actually offered it to both the Biden and Trump camps earlier in the year but no interest.

I thought the offer, which I accepted as quite reasonable and bird in hand etc, might be associated with Kamala getting the nod but having seen this it was probably someone with inside knowledge in the Trump camp as the name is very relevant.

Be interested to see where it finally appears.

Thanks, I had heard about that.  But I've heard that all his money is in roubles.

Straight up dumb ?

At least he knows it is posthumous - seriously doubt he knows that word, probably thinks it's some sort of Middle Eastern cart food in NYC - unlike Frederick Douglas. At least this is one woman he can't "just start kissing".

Not sure how much gas he'll get from this? Given his penchant for beauty pageants (paging Miss Moscow), calling women "Suburban Housewives" and objectifying women?

Observing the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, with this touch seems like a bare minimum of "behaving like a president"? So kudos to trump. Rarely do we see him "act" presidential.

It's all perception.  I agree Trump is just pandering for votes.  But no difference if Obama had done it.  He was a master at pandering.

Yep, the only problem is that she is dead. He should try to focus on the living instead.

I was only pointing out, and I'll do it again now, that your comment 'Funny stuff.  If Obama had done it Tug would be applauding him. ' was not correct, since Tug also in the case of Trump doing it said he agreed. And that is one thing Trump fans don't understand, people looking at it may not like Trump, but is he does something good they will say so. Whereas the Trump fans will always agree with Trump, even if he, and therefore they, need to bend like willows to achieve that.

There must be other ways to posthumously honor someone other than giving them a pardon? A pardon seems so transactional?

A Presidential Medal of Freedom seems a bit more appropriate?

I mean, heck, he gave one to Rush Limbaugh.

@johnnybangkok

Earlier we had a discussion about the letter sent to publishers by "We Have Her Back" group.  You insisted there were no underlying motives behind the letter and that you take it at face value.  Just curious.  Do you take Trump's pardon of Susan B. Anthony on face value or do read nefarious or self-serving motives by Trump into it?

Trump can do nothing good in their eyes .

Everything that Trump does is bad and wrong .

They always find a negative angle , like in this story "only doing it for votes"

It's such an obvious problem that not only does the left absolutely refuse to credit Trump for anything they are just as intent on finding any possible way of twisting a good deed into something illegal, nefarious, self-serving or other.  It's sick, in my view.

So you choose to ignore 'good, long overdue'.

The first "Dirty Harry" movie (the one with the school bus).  The villain kidnaps and murders kids, and the moment law enforcement closes in he's crying about be victimized.  A familiar motif?
