Trump touts convalescent plasma as a coronavirus treatment

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday touted the use of convalescent plasma as a treatment for COVID-19 and suggested a reported decision by regulators to put on hold an emergency authorization for its use could be politically motivated.

 

"I've heard fantastic things about convalescent plasma," Trump told a briefing.

 

An emergency approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use of blood plasma as a coronavirus treatment has been put on hold over concerns the data backing it was too weak, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

 

"It could be a political decision," Trump said.

 

"You have a lot of people over there that don't want to rush things because they want to do it after November 3," he said, referring to the presidential election.

 

"I've heard numbers way over 50% success. And people are dying and we should have it approved if it's good and I'm hearing it's good. I heard from people at the FDA that it's good," he said.

 

The FDA did not respond to a request for comment.

 

People who survive an infectious disease such as COVID-19 are left with blood plasma containing antibodies the body's immune system created to fight off a virus. This can be transfused into newly infected patients to try to aid recovery.

Agree, plus how come the details of the 'wow' items he comes up with and says 'he's read / he's heard good reports etc., are NEVER disclosed. 

 

Just tricky trump. All aligned to anything not agreeing with him claims/purpose is automatically 'political'.

This therapy does sound promising but there is zero evidence that it is being held back for political reasons to hurt dear leader. 

 

I guess it's some kind of progress that he's talking about something that actually might help.

People don't like to be reminded of the mistakes they've made. The Silent Majority defended nixon even as he walked to Marine 1. After that they pretended all 49 states didn't vote for him in 1972. (The 50th, Massachusetts, and DC, didn't vote for him, EC-wise.)

While convalescent plasma is not a new form of treatment and showed promises in covid treatment. Problem is that he whining and making this a political issue and he should allow his scientists to speak and tamper the expectation due to inadequate scientific evidence and established facts. In his rush to portray himself as a smart guy, he actually failed.

45,000/1,263 and 44,000/1,358 for Tue and Wed.

 

Seems like most schools and colleges won't open (for long) for in-person learning.

 

Honestly, if he just made the minimum effort to manage the crisis he'd get re-elected in a landslide. Re-directing his time, energy and intellectual prowess from snake-oil to executing rational plans and communicating recommendations based on science would insure another 4 years. But no, that's too much to ask evidently.

But I'm still waiting for somebody that actually votes for this dropkick to come to his defence with supporting facts. Surely somebody out there is prepared to put their name in lights and publicly support him. We do understand, of course, that you can't defend the indefensible. As an aside, are you allowed to carry your weapons into the polling booth?

Plasma might work if it contains antibodies.
