The court of appeal in Ratchadapisek, Bangkok, yesterday upheld a lower court's ruling that drug kingpin Xaysana Kaewphinpha be jailed for life.

The lower court had earlier sentenced him and an associate called Chumphon to death but this was commuted to life as their evidence was helpful.

A third suspect called Ratchaphon was acquitted in the case and an appeal is set to be heard today.

The case against Xaysana - recognised as one of the main international drug lords dealing internationally in the region - involved a consignment of 2,831,400 Ya Ba pills that was brought into Thailand from Laos to Nakhon Phanom and was then transported in adapted vehicles to Songkhla headed ultimately for Malaysia.

This happened between July and September 2015.

The case also led to the arrest of a celebrity known as "Benz Racing" who is the husband of Pat, a famous Thai actress.

A large number of news media were in attendance outside the court yesterday and security was tight, notes Thaivisa.

Special branch police cars were dotted throughout the area on Ratchadapisek road.
