GuyDow
One of my close relatives has just passed away. My usual phrasebooks are no help in this situation. Any suggestions for appropriate things to say to the bereaved? Otherwise I'll just keep my mouth shut.
PoodThaiMaiDai
I have lost my parents and two of my younger brothers. Do what makes you feel good. I did not keep a running total of who contacted me and who did not. I was in too much pain to keep score. However, a nice text message, email, card, or a phone call is nice. Just tell the person(s) you are thinking of them, and are sorry for their loss, and if they need anything to let you know. This goes a long way and makes the grieving not feel alone during their own grievance.
nrasmussen
I think เสียใจด้วย should do it.
Airalee
My father died yesterday and a Thai person I know kept it simple with “my condolences” which translates as ขอแสดงความเสียใจ https://www.thai2english.com/?id=0W2k5LD7j
GuyDow
Thanks to all for the constructive suggestions. Fortunately nothing too ambitious for my Thai language skills. I've been to the Wat the last three evenings and will be going there the remainder of this week. Interestingly Thais don't seem to talk much about the departed, it's just the usual casual conversation. Once again, thanks for your advice.
