Netizens fume after officials 'meet' parents over kindergartener's 3-finger salute

A video of some officials allegedly visiting the parents of the kindergartner who raised the anti-government three-finger salute has generated criticism from Thai netizens.

 

The incident was recorded by a security camera and posted on Facebook on Friday (August 21) with a message saying “the authorities are looking for Om Yim [the girl] for raising three fingers. Is that the reason why they came to threaten us?”.

 

On social media, people are debating the appropriateness of the action but the contents of the discussions between the officials and the parents were not known.

 

The girl was identified as a kindergarten student in Yasothon province. After she reportedly made the three-finger salute, other children followed her, expressing their support for her.

There are currently big 3 bad promotional stories running on the UK media about Thailand in the last 3 days.

 

1. Thailand mass deaths on the road.

2. Protests by the youth about rigged elections.

3. Forced hair cutting of students by teachers and forced military like teaching.

 

Thailand - and especially the ruling elite - are being portrayed very, very badly now. 

 

I cannot see the status quo carrying on - something is going to have to change - question though is is it for the better or worse

 

We should celebrate a 3 finger salute...it is the 1 finger salute that gets people in trouble...

And to think there are some foreigners here who believe the junta are what is best for Thailand. Scary. 

They are truly scared! They should probably ask how much a kindergartener and her friends really know regarding the meaning of the salute.

Pettiness abounds in army controlled Thailand.  The fact that this even made the news shows profound problems with the country.

What salute? She was asked if she wants a cake, she replied: yes, 3 cakes

What are they going to do? send them to the attitude adjustment camp just like their Chinese masters are doing with Uighurs

The people who support Prayuth and the golden family are thinking about making camps right now. Thai people don't know what their rights are and have never known freedom. Talking about some things in Thailand is like talking about the devil. Actually, they aren't wrong about that will the abuses, jailings and murders those in the Thai Devil's cult have perpetrated over the decades up to today.

It's okay to brainwash and indoctrinate kids at daycare centers and kindergartens to wai and prostrate to the golden gods who walk among men but not to false gods. I bet that little girl has a nice yellow shirt, blue bandana and a blue hat she can put on to show her intelligence.

I think by using the three-finger salute she was just saying, “Hooray for the three submarines!”

I just hope there was no swat team with body armor and a military attack vehicle sent to the scene of the crime...

Sad when authorities have to do a home visit for what they deem as inappropriate behaviour..

I would have told the officials to walk on by... nothing to discuss here.

Are you insinuating that would be the proper salute to the sitting regime? 

Since she is a kindergartener and they are not yet self thinkers, they the regime presume this anti stuff is coming from her parents and they are going to force the parents into submission. They know if not stopped this leads to the young Thai kids opposing them at an early adolescent age and they can't afford that.. Don't all kindergarteners have mobile phones now and quite possible to see it on line? 

 

This might possible be another powerful force in the oppositions crusade against the regime and all they stand for.

My wife said yesterday that Prawit had apparently said he couldn't see the problem as it was a scout salute. It make her laugh anyway.

 

My mind you there's a phrase about sharp knives in drawers (not draws) and one of them not being the sharpest.

I am vehemently opposed to toddlers and small children being used - and indeed abused - by adults to push the latter's political or social agendas. For instance, I dislike images and footage that show 5-year-olds joining street protests and carrying carrying placards emblazoned with slogans like "Save the Planet for the Sake of MY Future!" and similar messages. It is very clear that such placards are not written BY those children, but FOR them. Small children simply do not have the mental capability nor the awareness to ponder political or social topics. Nor do they have any interest in expressing opinions on such topics. There always - always! - is an adult (or groups of adults) behind the scenes. 

 

The girl, Om Yim, in the OP saw that three-finger salute someplace else and mimicked it. Or she was actively coaxed by adults into displaying it. This is reinforced by - as the report says - other children joining in, simply parroting Om Yim. At no point was there a conscious decision by Om Yim and the other children to raise a three-finger salute as an expression of protest against the Thai regime or a demonstration of dissatisfaction with and rejection of Thailand's current political and social situation.

 

Having explained that, it still is utterly outrageous and deeply worrying that Om Yim's parents would receive a visit from government bullies. It clearly shows that the right of free expression is being systematically denied and oppressed in this country.

 

One wonders whether Om Yim's parents would likewise had had the doubtful honor of welcoming intimidating visitors had the little girl displayed the Nazi salute instead. Most probably not. After all, that particular salute is synonymous with complete unquestioning subjugation to the state. And that is exactly what "they" want.
