First B29 Bomber Operational Action - Bombing Bangkok

Featured Replies

Here's interesting, for some military history buffs.  The first time a USAAF  B29 Super Fortress went into action, was on 5/6th June 1044, on a bombing raid, on Bangkok.  So much for Thailand being 'neutral' in WW2. Obviously the US didn't think so. I bet they don't teach that in Thai school history lessons.  The aircraft Captain on that flight was Col Carter McGregor. I wonder if he ever came to LOS on holiday?

Erm, think you are getting your dates mixed up. The Magna Carta was signed in 1215. 1066 was the Battle of Hastings.

Still not quite as wide of the mark as the date in the OP.

Accept my humble apologies, you are most correct. ???? Please understand, I was very young when this went down. ????

The RAF also started bombing Bangkok in 1942 flying from Rangoon, targeting the railways and bridges.

The Japanese basically used Thailand as a base to attack the rest of Asia.

Thailand managed to stay away from the Axis of Evil for almost 80 years, now it's back to commieland. Maybe US should drop a few more on BKK as a reminder.

And British bombers beat them to it by 2 years!

Nor did we (the Brits); a few months later, in October 1944, HMS Trenchant launched successful human torpedo attacks in the Phuket roads. Trenchant's Navigating Officer and my dad later served together on corvettes.

And the allied slave labor POW's. They enjoyed the local food that the Thai's supplied along with "entertainment". The Japanese did'nt require Korean comfort women in Thailand!
