A seminar in Bangkok heard that online baccarat is destroying thousands of families in Thailand.

"Baccarat Kills Families" was held at the Mandarin Hotel in Bangkok and was organised by an anti gambling group and health authorities to raise awareness about the menace of the card game.

Gamblers who have fallen prey to its alluring charm spoke of their addiction and distress.

While those in charge of the seminar likened it to the pandemic saying that knowledge was the vaccine that was needed to stop its spread.

Anti-gambling group secretary Thanakorn Komkrit said that the nature of baccarat made it a particular threat.

He pointed to its fast turnover of opportunities encouraging the gambler to keep trying, chase losses and be encouraged to keep going by apparent near misses of winnings.

It was available 24/7 and high stakes could be wagered.

It was affecting every age group in Thailand equally from children to pensioners and was a menace that needed to be fought.

One gambler named just as "A" spoke of how he started at age 21 and within a few years had lost half a million baht.

It had created big problems between him and his girlfriend and his family.

Daily News suggested that at least 10,000 families had been destroyed by online baccarat.

Always a problem drugs, gambling, alcohol. Some can handle it others cannot. Too bad that we always have to cater to the weakest of the society.

Sounds like a lady who has fallen fora romance scammers. Also a kind of online gambling.

In my younger years I used to gamble quite a lot, and it became problem gambling for me. However, I never got into or tried online gambling, or gambling on credit. I had a relative who was gambling online (slots I think), it was only when he died that it was known how much debt he'd run up doing so.

When the option of playing a 10 baht crane game is removed I guess this costly and available alternative is where thrill seekers end up

Why is online gambling even legal?  In the USA, Broadcast Christian channels have ruined more lives than gambling.  People spending their savings trying to buy a magical prayer or a mythical entry to "heaven".

No society needs these things

Internet gambling had started out in mid/late 1990's.   It was virtually the first 'kick of the can" for online business -- easy setting up at low cost, low maintenance, high profitability.

I had predicted internet gambling WOULD NOT be a biggie way back then,  the failing had been all about gambler psychology.   Now, decades had gone by,  we had not yet heard of anybody making billions running online/internet gambling business.

Seeing how the Thai are so crazy about betting on live boxing in boxing stadium.   I suspect the Thai are not keen about ONLINE Baccarat,  or ONLINE gambling as a whole either.

Really? Head of Bet365 in UK paid herself a salary of 422 million USD in 2019.

AFAIK,  online gambling is illegal in Thailand so it's market is bound to be limited to an extent.

The second Thai person I've had talk about online gambling, lost about 50k THB during the COVID lockdown. It was their first foray into gambling, and the binge lasted about 3-4 days. Around half of their bank account. At least they had the sense to stop before it was empty.

It's a problem - as when there's that kind of easy money on the table (50k in 4 days), you can imagine the incentive for online gambling companies to seek out these problem gamblers.

It made me wonder about the legalities, as they were using domestic bank transfers to fund the account.. I thought it was illegal here, and you would think any domestic transfer would be easy to trace and prosecute.

If the payout percentages for online or casino gambling were anywhere near as low as the payout for most state sanctioned lotteries, they'd dry up.

Ask yourself "Am I feeling luckeeee!" ????????

Obsessive-compulsive behavior will usually find some avenue. Most will find some other destructive preoccupation.

Mandarin Hotel in Bangkok, do they need to hold their meeting in such a luxurious hotel?
