LONDON (Reuters) - Veteran rockers The Rolling Stones topped the British album charts once again on Friday, creating history by becoming the first band to score a number one album across six different decades, the Official Charts Company said.

The band, who first began performing in 1962, went straight to the top spot with a remastered version of their "Goats Head Soup" album, which was originally released in 1973 when it also reached number one.

The Stones, who still regularly tour despite their members such as singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards being well into their seventies, have now scored 13 UK chart-topping albums, the same number as Elvis Presley and Robbie Williams.

Only The Beatles have managed more with 15, the Official Charts Company said.

What has the current age of Mick & Keith got to do with an album they recorded in 1973? And what about Charlie, almost 80!

Mozart and Beethoven would be proud of them.  Music that lives forever.

For me the most surprising thing about the story is that Robbie Williams has had so many number 1 albums.

Good for them. Not what they used to be, but who among us is? Saw them back in 66 ($4.50 ticket, 3rd row center, they got $17,000 for the concert) and consider Aftermath period their best. Plenty of good stuff after that, but what the hey. Keith is smart and a hoot.... Mick is....well, Mick is Mick.

I do recall story (maybe just a story) that Clapton told Ron Wood "I could have been the replacement player" & Ron replied "Yeah, but you'd then have to live with them...."

I remember seeing an article in the Guardian in 1972 saying they were on their last tour of the USA and intended to retire, 1973 would have been about the tight time to have.

Yes if i remember correctly that was before he sacked his song writer (an Irishman i think) for having the nerve to ask would Robbie include his name on the albums since he had written all Robbies hits, needless to say after the sacking Robbie had no more hits, Bigheaded bartsard!

I thought that Robbie and his co song writer, Guy Chambers parted ways because Chambers wanted to work with other artists and Robbie dissolved their writing partnership because he wanted Guy to exclusively write songs with him

Just about every tour since 1969 has been their last tour.......I remember very clearly that their 1982 tour was come hell or high water.....We are not joking.....We really really 100% mean it this time.......You will never ever ever be able to see us ever again.....last last tour last chance FOREVER.......lol

Goats Head Soup ? Really ? Ok. "Angie"  was a winner.

But "Sticky  Fingers" album is  a forever in  my head .

Nope alcohol , he said that all that heavy drinking was getting boring, and that, except for the occasional glass of wine with his dinner, he had quit booze.

Who's is Robbie Williams?

Don't include Abba with that loser band. Abba was without doubt the greatest and most popular pop group ever. The spice girls were a manufactured group that sang junk ( IMO ) songs and became nothing when they sacked their manager. However, they did make Viva Forever, so that's a tiny plus for them.

I remember the interview Jagger had when he was a young man where he said that he couldn't see continuing when he got old ( probably about 40 ). I guess the groupies kept him going. Be hard to give up all that free sex.

How can there be a top spot when apparently most music is stolen now? They stopped selling 45s a very long time ago.

I found it surprising.  I can't imagine young people saying 'Hmm Goats Head Soup from the early seventies with a few added tracks. This is a must buy.' Maybe it got heaps of the older fans excited. Maybe it resonates in a way I don't get. I still listen to 1973 music but it's more likely to be Trex or the Sweet.
