Watana Muangsook, a core Pheu Thai Party member, was sentenced to 99 years in jail on Thursday after being found guilty of interfering with witness statements in the Baan Ua-arthorn housing project scandal.

The Supreme Court ruled that former social development and human security minister Watana, Mana Vongpivat, Pornprom Vongpivat, Apichart Chansakulporn and Arisman Pongruangrong had abused their positions to gain benefits for themselves from the Thaksin-era low-cost housing scheme.

They were also found guilty of breaching their duties resulting in corruption or damage to others and of accepting property or benefits for themselves.

Watana was sentenced to 99 years and Apichart to 66 years in prison, but by law their jail time will be limited to 50 years.

Thats the sort of sentences we should have in the West make some sit up and take notice

Starting with parking tickets at a straight 25 stretch

What about Nattawut and Jatuporn?

Sentence cut in half for good behaviour.

I did see a 35 year sentence handed down in the UK a few weeks ago.

Then again, there was a woman dealing cocaine from the Post Office that she worked at, got a suspended sentence!????

If only they had jumped ship and joined the opposition party chances are they would still be into the real estate business.

I'm sure I read on this forum (in a previous news article) that the maximum prison sentence is 20 years in Thailand.

What do you chose? Opposition or Co-operation? In other words, jail or acquittal?

Indeed, corrupt is corrupt. Though id feel better if the current mob got caught for it too. But not much chance of that

Yet kill a policeman and drag his body 100 metres whilst high on cocaine and still years later nothing has been done to bring the perpetrator to court even though he is very well known even murderers in Thailand don’t receive sentences as passed on these people .

99 years prison , is anybody else seeing all those advertisement for bunkbeds on here ?? Just on this newspage alone i get 4 555555 coinsedence ??

Already out on bail according to BKK post

With so much corruption in Thailand, 99 years is just a sentence against the Pheu Thai Party.

If they were going to be serious about eliminating corruption this way, they will need to make an island prison for tens of thousands, and get some foreigners to come in help run the country.

Misleading headline... Watana is already out on bail, 10 million baht, on the condition that he doesn't leave the country..... 10 Million is probably petty cash for him, he can write that off and disappear abroad,.. Dubai?
