Thailand's Region 1 immigration officers became suspicious after they discovered that people from Myanmar were applying for work permits with fake documents accompanied by bogus stamps.

They discovered that a grocer's shop in the Lansai Plaza market in Sathupradit near the Myanmar Embassy was a front for the operation.

They staked out the grocer's pretending to be customers.

Many people were coming and going but they were not buying vegetables - they were presenting and receiving documents.

When they had gained enough evidence Ong and two female compatriots from Myanmar were arrested.

A large quantity of Myanmar passports and stamps of various kinds were found at the property.

Ong admitted that he had been in Thailand for a long time and could read Thai.

He used to take compatriots to get legal work permits and other documentation then started his own business.

He copied the stamps after becoming familiar with the ones required.

They included immigration stamps and those from hospitals, both state and private, used on medical certificates.

He charged 2,000 to 3,000 baht a time.

Naew Na reported that the inquiry is being widened to find other agents in the fake visa and work permit business.
