It sounds like a good idea to me.  Lots of good affordable accommodation in a variety of settings available at prices that would be very competitive with many 'developed' countries.  Good fast affordable internet available. Long term stayers.. probably would put up with 14 day quarantine.. Why do a bunch of negative thinking guys immediately jump on any thread that has  a new idea jump in and and trash it??

Since COVID struck, millions of people have been working from home for their companies. Some of them are very well paid. Many companies are downsizing their offices. The City of London financial district is a ghost town.

Many of these people will be considering relocating in their own country or even abroad. If Thailand made it easy for them to come, it would be a good opportunity to make up some of their lost tourism income.

On internet connectivity, it's pretty mixed.

 

Cost is OK, but not that fantastic.

 

Intra Thai speeds are pretty good, but once you start dealing with anything internationally through the gateway things can go south pretty quick. 

 

Throttling and ping times can make any vid conferencing tough.

 

Then there are the inexplicable outages which just happen, that makes running a business difficult

Many people are surely already working as digital nomads in Thailand, often anonymously, without any need for a visa. I know someone who periodically works for an overseas company on the internet, and how would the government know? We haven't quite reached that stage of government surveillance.

Sure, but it's not just the permit to enter and stay. You also need a permit to work to be able to pay taxes. It's a huge overhaul of the ancient system. All for it - doubt it's ever going to happen.

I think Thailand Think tank is on the right path . Give elite visas to those who invest 10 million , and make them jump through 100 hoops to actually come here, Turn it into hub after spending half a decade hunting and removing digital nomads . All very good ideas ????

I think they had that idea a while ago ???? Pensioners on this forum sometimes feel unappreciated, but I'm sure the Bank of Thailand knows exactly how much foreign currency they bring in.

It's not a good nor a new idea

just hot air from an old politician trying to exists

The group you describe in your post fit perfectly the actual retirees

with a valid visa, a lot of them still not allowed to return in Thailand

so don't be surprised if they don't like so much the idea to be short cutted 

in the wait list to enter

    

    Nomads , people without fixed habitation .

Pretty easy to get a Thai tax id tbh, you don't even need a work permit.

I would definitely come and stay in Thailand, IF there were sensible entry requirements and work online there happily. I would like to settle somewhere in the east of Thailand. Out of the way of tourist hotspots and have a quiet life working online.

Try declaring income without a work permit. Although Revenue Department might not care as long as you pay the piper. Labor is another matter and it's illegal to work without a WP.
