Make Thailand a "hub" for digital nomads, suggests influential Thai politician

Right, like I'd ever be dim enough to openly admit that at the gate or down at the IO. ????

Give it up already, the ship has sailed.

*sits back and sips 60 baht mojito* ????

Good positive idea with potential

As specified in the post you quoted, they raided co-working offices and coffee shops.

Most people can't keep secrets anyway and openly boast they are working online to anyone that will listen.

First two things young people reveal about themselves in Thailand .......

1) I'm a vegan

2) I'm a digital nomad.

Why on earth would anyone openly admit gainful employment when it's well known they're always looking to make someone get a "work permit?"

I suspect you're either just making things up out of spiteful boredom, or these people got ran off lonnng ago for talking too much. I'm leaning towards the former.

Good luck getting tax out of that crowd of wandering dropouts. Try Google and Amazon first mates, see how that goes.

A tax added to there Visa would do it. Come on guy it is the best idea yet. It happens if you like it or not.

It sounds like a good idea to me.  Lots of good affordable accommodation in a variety of settings available at prices that would be very competitive with many 'developed' countries.  Good fast affordable internet available. Long term stayers.. probably would put up with 14 day quarantine.. Why do a bunch of negative thinking guys immediately jump on any thread that has  a new idea jump in and and trash it??

There it is! The hub! I knew it was only a matter of time before we got to the hub phase in the discussion of what to do about getting foreigners back in the country! ????????????

yes there are, but not many, if any,  of the serious players are bumming around Thailand.

Since COVID struck, millions of people have been working from home for their companies. Some of them are very well paid. Many companies are downsizing their offices. The City of London financial district is a ghost town.

Many of these people will be considering relocating in their own country or even abroad. If Thailand made it easy for them to come, it would be a good opportunity to make up some of their lost tourism income.

On internet connectivity, it's pretty mixed.

Cost is OK, but not that fantastic.

Intra Thai speeds are pretty good, but once you start dealing with anything internationally through the gateway things can go south pretty quick.

Throttling and ping times can make any vid conferencing tough.

Then there are the inexplicable outages which just happen, that makes running a business difficult

Ah the return of the ''hubs'', for some reasons Thai politicians like this word.

About the digital nomads, Korn is late at the party, Thailand has already

missed the opportunity few years ago, in a perfectly volontary way.

From the Thai authorities point of view. a digital nomad is a Youtuber

doing video in Thailand and on Thailand without paying any taxes on it

or an illegal internet scam artist (Nigerian romance, chinese gambling or russian forex)

Oh dear , I see rather than trying to restore the country's economy & opening up, he is embracing the Globalists reimagining the Countries tourism industry, advocating digital technology no doubt suited to his own agenda

Pathetique & disrespectful , open up , even WHO are indicating no more lockdowns or masks

raid:

Looks at browser history.  Pornhub Pornhub, pornhub. Email. google docs, pornhub.

Officer: Are you working online?

Visiter:  "Nuh............."   Looks at wife, looks back at officer.  "YES SIR! take me away. Guilty!"

Many people are surely already working as digital nomads in Thailand, often anonymously, without any need for a visa. I know someone who periodically works for an overseas company on the internet, and how would the government know? We haven't quite reached that stage of government surveillance.

I'm surprised nobody has thought of encouraging pensioners to live here.

They have guaranteed incomes that will keep coming until they die.

And often still keep coming even after they die

Not many, if any, of the 'wandering dropouts' are bumming around Thailand - unless they're planning on overstay. Someone as skint as you're implying couldn't afford the visa extension.

Before covid they were here on tourists visas, doing regulary runs to the borders

the most ''fortunates'' were paying an agent to arrange their stay without having

the financials requirments

Sure, but it's not just the permit to enter and stay. You also need a permit to work to be able to pay taxes. It's a huge overhaul of the ancient system. All for it - doubt it's ever going to happen.

I think Thailand Think tank is on the right path . Give elite visas to those who invest 10 million , and make them jump through 100 hoops to actually come here, Turn it into hub after spending half a decade hunting and removing digital nomads . All very good ideas ????

I think they had that idea a while ago ???? Pensioners on this forum sometimes feel unappreciated, but I'm sure the Bank of Thailand knows exactly how much foreign currency they bring in.

It's not a good nor a new idea

just hot air from an old politician trying to exists

The group you describe in your post fit perfectly the actual retirees

with a valid visa, a lot of them still not allowed to return in Thailand

so don't be surprised if they don't like so much the idea to be short cutted

in the wait list to enter

Nomads , people without fixed habitation .

Surely , they do not mean , us farlangs ...?

Perfect for me, but I'm afraid it will not happen... ????

Pretty easy to get a Thai tax id tbh, you don't even need a work permit.

I would definitely come and stay in Thailand, IF there were sensible entry requirements and work online there happily. I would like to settle somewhere in the east of Thailand. Out of the way of tourist hotspots and have a quiet life working online.

Well it's official.

These news releases are for the slack-jawed yokels to parouse (sic) over while eating their breakfast riddles.

I can remember when it was a thing.  It was long ago.

You wouldn't want them anyways - they are not high paying tourists.

Ahhh, the glory and  honor of having 2 countries tax you simultaneously and both give you nothing in return.

I can't believe there is not a bigger outcry for this.

Try declaring income without a work permit. Although Revenue Department might not care as long as you pay the piper. Labor is another matter and it's illegal to work without a WP.

Then go, LOL.  You don't need a work permit.

Lot of skewed ideas here.

First, google facebook and apple have made working from home mandatory not optional. Not just senior staff, all that can, do.

3 out of 5 office based workers in the UK are still working from home.

Wfh - learn the abbreviation gents it's gone mainstream and yeah I agree those trend sheep scratching cash together working online free lancing were a bad example of digital nomads who thought being broke was part of the nomad dna. Then you got those nomad exploitation specialists doing bootcamps and all kinds of utter <deleted>.

The new wave of nomads will not be like the above and some have been around for years already but more will come and the real deal are dropping 60k a month in this country continually every month for years and saving just as much as the cost of living allows for it.

ASQ and then NQA no questions asked just show you have $15000 on arrival and <deleted> off, enjoy thailand.

Splatter it that's it bon voyage see you later but if you can show that same amount 12 months from now welcone to thailand.

Rinse and repeat.

Where have I seen something similar????

Be afraid, be very afraid, worlds moved on be thankful you had a taste.

Lots of office workers in the UK saying how great it is to be working from home, probably understandably.

However, if one works from home, it doesn't really matter to the company if that home's in the UK or India??!????
