LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said on Saturday it was immediately banning entry to visitors from Denmark in response to concern over outbreaks of coronavirus on Danish mink farms.

Denmark has announced strict new lockdown rules and a nationwide mink cull after authorities discovered a mutated coronavirus strain in the animals. Britain initially responded by announcing on Thursday that all travellers arriving from the country would be required to self-isolate on arrival.

Now, after receiving further information from Danish health officials, it has imposed a total ban on arrivals from Denmark, with the exception of hauliers and freight.

"Visitors arriving into the UK from Denmark will not be permitted entry into the UK," British transport minister Grant Shapps said on Twitter.

"This decision to act quickly follows on from health authorities in Denmark reporting widespread outbreaks of coronavirus in mink farms."

Britain's transport department said all non-British nationals or resident travellers who have been in or transited through Denmark in the last 14 days would be denied entry.

It said the ban would be reviewed after a week.

It is the UK with the problem, not Denmark.

A mutated and more dangerous version of the Coronavirus .

That is what you get when you torture 15 million (!) minks by putting them into small cages and treating them not species-appropriate . .

That is already the 2nd zoonotic transmission in a relatively short time .

It is time to respect living creatures , and to stop the torture .

If no end to this , there will be no end to always new versions of viruses appearing as well .

seems like there is an absurd overreaction to this corona situation, a result of too much relienace on science and too much beurocracy and hysteric officials.

Wadda ya tink this will do to the price of mink coats in China???

Apparently they knew about covid-19 in mink since May.

Following the previous findings of Covid-19 in a few mink - infected by employees - on three Dutch mink farms, there is now in the Netherlands a preliminary suspicion of a case of infection with Covid-19 from mink to human. This is an employee on a farm. The Dutch authorities will now carry out a more detailed analysis of the possible specific routes of infection. The risk of transmitting infection from the farm and into the surrounding community is still considered by the authorities to be quite insignificant, and no virus has been found in air and dust samples outside the stables on the Dutch farms, for example.

thailand may need to reconsider its previously mooted  preference for scandanavian 'snowbird' tourists...

Pedants corner: Britain has not banned entry to all travellers from Denmark.

The UK government cannot legally prevent a British citizen from entering the UK. British citizens travelling from Denmark are still allowed entry; but, as with those arriving from many other departure points, will need to self isolate for 14 days on arrival.
